Can anybody give me advice on the cost of child care and schooling In USA in general?

We are hoping to emigrate and have a 4 year old and we need to budget for child care and I need some information on schooling. for example school hours and care after school and school holidays.

I have a web site for au pairs, which I found to be expensive as you have to pay immigration costs plus around $275 per week plus board and lodgings.

Thank you any information would be gratefully recieved

Kay,

I have 3 children, 2 of whom are school-aged. I live in Florida, so I'm sure things vary widely for other areas.

My daughters, who are in Kindergarten and 2nd grade, go to school 8am-2pm. The school offers after school care until 6pm at a cost of $142/month/student, and they are very strict about being on time. My son is 2, and goes to a daycare that is open from 630am-6pm at a cost of $95/week (this is very low for the area.) In the summers, my son's daycare will also take my girls, and my cost for all 3 is $160/week (again, extremely low for the are, most places run significantly more than $100/week per child.)

Holidays are pretty standard, but if you know where you want to move, check to see if the public school system's website lists specifics.

Good luck.

I live in a suburb of Atlanta Georgia. My 6 year old attends public school from 8:00am - 2:30pm. Children can arrive as early as 7:00 and stay in the media room/library until class starts. Afterschool care costs $60 week and is open until 6:30. If I needed before school care also it would only cost $5 more (and opens at 6:00 am) for a total of $65 a week. The daycare provides the transportation to school/from school. During school breaks when my child does not attend school the cost for daycare is $85 a week (6am-6:30pm). I researched all the daycares in my area and this is an average price (all other daycare centers were within $5)

You are lucky you child is already 4! If your child is 4, you will probably need a private preschool. In Los Angeles, our preschool charges ~$600/month for 8:30a.m.-3:45p.m, with hot lunch, and no aftercare. Some hospitals have on-site childcare too. If your child turns 5 before December 8, 2005, s/he could probably start public school kindergarten, which is 1/2 day someplaces, full others. I think the full-day school ends at 2:30-2:45p.m. Just beware that the quality of schools really varies. It's worth it to pay more and live somewhere with good schools. Private schools cost $8,000 and up/year here, but scholarships are often available.

P.S., you parents above have some wonderfully cheap daycare! Be thankful!

Thank you for all your replies, it gives me at least an idea. I pay around $700 a month here in UK which is very cheap so I imagine child care costs in US are similar going by your posts thank you. :)
