CHEMISTRY.

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Is it bad that we only went over the syllabus yesterday and I already want to cry?

Advice/tips, please!

Chemistry was a no joke but i came out their with a grade B. My advice is, if you have any extra credit assignments you can do, then do them. Participate in class to get your extra points. What people don't realize is that these extra credit points really do make a difference in class. I think out of all the classes that i've took, Chemistry was a class i hated. However my professor made the class more exciting, so hopefully you will have a professor who hands out extra credit and is not bloody boring. Good luck[/quote']

Mine constantly went on a tangent about how extra credit was BS and how no one should ever get extra points, be graded on curves, no rounding up, etc. So naturally that meant I got no extra help from him in that department. My straight B was earned based on my own true merit but my God, it was an absolute nightmare to deal with. :(

However, he made himself extremely available for students in need of help to make up for it. I'm talking any time of day/night (within reason), at any public place. He gave us his cell phone # and skype account username, too. I got a tremendous amount of help from him, so for most of my time in the class I was able to overlook the no extra credit policy.

I start tomorrow and I'm very nervous. *biting nails* Trying to not freak out.

My chem professor told us on our first day that we have 800 pages worth of material to learn in 16 weeks and that this class used to be taught in 3 semesters. It's gen chem, OrganicChemistry and bio chem all in one. It's a lot of work thus far & tomorrow starts my 2nd week! It's overwhelming but I know I need to do well to get into my program so that's my motivation!

@Mandy0728 I'm also taking the Inorganic/ Organic and Biochem lecture. I start tomorrow. I just downloaded the syllabus and my head is already spinning. You know, I do feel like it's more of a survey course. From what I'm reading, my class however, will be delving only into key concepts of the three. After all it is only 15 weeks! My textbook is a HOG though and I read the first few chapters, which are reviews of my high school AP class.

Either way, I'm still glad I'm taking this one and not Chemistry 1 though. I shutter at the thought of Chem 1.

In my state, they only require me to take General Chemistry I. There's no apparent need for Gen. Chem. II or even Organic Chemistry.

But I'm dreading the day I have to take Gen. Chem. I. I probably won't have to worry about it until Fall 2014, but I don't know. I took Chemistry in high school and scored a D overall, but I mainly slacked off after the second test in that class (which I passed the first test with an A, I think).

I am taking the second half on Chemistry tomorrow and I am so nervous. I hope I do well.

I hated Chemisty. I had a horrible teacher AND I took it during the summer as an accelerated course. I had taken it back in highschool but remembered nothing. I remember sitting exactly where you were and feeling so unprepared. My advice: Do all the supplemental homework to the best of your ability, pay close attention in lab and get all the lab points available. That way even if you don't do super well on the tests you are still likely to make a B. Good luck!

I second this statement. The poorest grade I ever got in college thus far is one solid C (the rest were A's and about 3 B's) and it was in Organic/Biochemistry. In my state, that class is not needed for ADN programs, but you will have to take it to recieve your BSN. Since I want my BSN one day, I wanted to get all non-nursing required elements done and out of my life so when I move on, I only have my nursing classes to worry about. Luckily, as long as I got a C specifically for this class, I would not have to retake it later on.

I am not exaggerating when I say the labs saved my grade. If I did poorly on the labs I would have crashed and burned horribly before the quarter even ended. We were only given 3 tests and I did not do well on all three, but for all my labwork and reports, I got nearly perfect scores each time. And some questions on the test related to lab, so I at least always got those right.

I am an intelligent person and I work damn hard, but straight chemistry on its own is my achilles heel. It's all ironic though because I rocked A&P and totally understood biochemistry when it was taught from a medical context. In just a chemistry class though? Forget it! At least for me and my experience, it is completely different.

Our book is huge as well! The first 3 chapters we learned last week are a review of high school and our first exam is over 10 chapters lol. I know there's harder chem classes after this one as well, but this one is strictly for nursing students (at my school). There's still 200 kids in my class. Mostly freshmen....I can def point them out in the crowd...they still have the maturity level of a high schooler. I'm biased though since I'm 28 now but still. Lol good luck to you & let's cross our fingers of our acceptance letters!!!

I know for a fact if my professor gave me his mobile number and his Skype account, i would be blowing up all communications with him lol trust me. He would be sick of me. Well that's good you got out of that class. Good luck for future classes.

Same here!

My teacher is an old man who talks monotone lol. I almost used all of one eraser ans I only had two classes! We have tutors (some peer, and one teacher) available to us and I am getting it better now. My lab partner on the other hand.......
