I'm hoping we can make this a sticky and have a new Chem group for Fall 2007. I'm starting August 23. I'm taking Chem (of course), A&P 1, and Nutrition. Anyone else up for a Chem group?
Good Luck to us All!!:yeahthat:
I made some of the most silliest errors during my Chem quiz today. Eeeaggh. I couldn't believe it. I knew the material when I walked in and ended up w/ a C. Not that I won't take it b/c there were a lot of students who did not pass but I am just so angry w/ myself. I don't know if I was just so nervous that I rushed or that I was so nervous I was cloudy minded.
Oh well, nothing I can do now but make sure I don't make the same mistake twice.
oh man I'm so in. I'm just taking Chem 111, it's general chem. there was one easier chem but it was full. I'm so scared, I haven't taken any Chem since sophomore year of high school ('98-'99!). I took A&P I and II this past spring/summer and that went well so hopefully chem will too. Good luck to you all, i'm glad i found this website today, i'm sure i'll be frequenting this page this semester!
I had my first Intro to Chem class this week and it wasn't so bad (yet!) I have heard good things about the professor and so far so good. We meet once a week so class is a little long but we can leave early if we complete our labs. We have to write a lab report (they seem pretty basic) and have a quiz every week + tests. The final is cumulative so that is scary! It doesn't appear that we will have to memorize the periodic table. Keeping my fingers crossed on that one! Good luck everyone.... we can do it!
I found a site from my school that has a bunch of chem problems and info on it.
I'd like to join this group! My name is Jenny, and I am taking Intro Chem, Bio for science majors (hon), English 2, and Western Civilization before 1700's.
So far, I like the chemistry and the biology. This is my first science class, and there seems to be a lot of new information to learn (memorize.)
Anyone figured out how to memorize the functional groups attached to Hydrocarbons yet? ie hydroxyl, carboxyl group, carbonyl group, etc.
Jenny!
My General Chem II class starts this week. I took it about 13 years ago, but didn't feel like taking the final exam, so failed the class. Boy am I kicking myself now. At any rate though, I would have had to take my chem over anyhow because the schools I am applying to don't accept science greater than seven years old....
I'm scared and nervous.

Flash cards, over and over and over.
Also, look at the roots:
Hydr-Oxy-l = Hydrogen and Oxygen = -OH
Carb-Oxy-l = Carbon and Oxygen - For this one, it helps to remember that carbon has 4 valence electrons and hence forms four bonds while oxygen forms two bonds so the carboxyl group is:
O
II
-C--O--H
For carbonyl, I just remembered it.
For methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, I used the first stupid mnemonic that popped into my head: "Mary Eats Peanut Butter" 14 years later, I still have it...
Did I mention flash cards?
Tomarrow is our first test over chapter's 1 and 2, I am more so nervous because Im so anxious to take it then nervous that I dont know the info. Wish my luck folks, Im going for an A or B in Chem this semester my gpa needs the boost. Progress report time, how is everyone's classes (especially Chem) coming along?

I'm loving my Chem class thus far! On the other hand, I'm dropping my "hybrid" Anatomy class. Maybe anatomy will work out for me in the spring.:)
