Cheating?

Hi everyone....

Just had a question for you guys....how do your instructors handle cheating? At my school the instructors are sooo strict about cheating even though we really havent given them any reason to think that we would do that.

I understand sitting every other seat and such but my school goes to the extent that they watch us like hawks and make us put our cell phones and bags in the front of the room. There are only 28 of us in the entire program.

We had a whole class on cheating and were told that if we were caught cheating we would be dismissed from the program (which I dont disagree with). They run our papers through some computer program that scans the internet for plagerims too. The school I did my undergrad in was definetly not as strict...just wondering how strict other programs were about this and what precautions/ramifications the instructors take?

Specializes in Operating Room.

That's why I suggested an anonymous, no names being called e-mail saying it looked like two people may have been cheating. Please watch the class better for the next test....etc.

No one is named, no one is "caught" being the "narc", and no one gets an A that has only studied enough to make a F!

In my A&P class there were two sisters cheating, or "talking" during a lab practical. I stopped still and just stared at them. Luckily, the instructor saw them, and reminded the room there was to be no talking...

I don't know what I would have done, but I know good and well everytime one of the sisters would ask me if I thought a test was easy, I would reply, "Yes it was easy for me, but I studied extremely hard. So, it's hard for me to say if it will be easy or hard for you. It all depends on how much you have studied."

na dosent bother me at all. as long as i am getting the grade i earned. if i work hard and earn a A then i am happy. someone elses grade doesnt matter at all, their grade doesnt reflect me or my efforts in any way. i went to school to learn and thats what i did. telling on someone why?? whats the purpose? doesnt change anything for you. it all comes out in the wash anyway. i do however think if your caught you should be kicked out. but i see no reason for me to go out of my way in a effort to bring shame to someone else in a class setting. why not be a team player and talk to the students you saw cheating and offer you help? if you really care instead of trying to get rid of them try to help them. i bet if you help them they will be less likely to cheat in the future. A couple of years ago, two brothers got caught cheating on the NCLEX. The result was a permanent ban on ever getting an RN license. Cheaters deserve what ever they get and do not belong in nursing!!!

How can anyone possibly cheat on the Nclex, I'm curious to know. Every particle of air was under surveillance at my test center.

A lot of cheating went on in my school, as far as I could detect. The proctors didn't do their jobs and I always heard whispering behind me. There was the usualy policing - bags in front of the room, instructors assigning seatings randomly, but people can get very creative. And the worst cheating was on the research papers. Many people got papers from the previous graduating class, and since the grading was split up between so many instructors, it was easy a get a different instructor. People cheating in my class made me feel violated - you bust your behind ( not to mention over dry subject ) while some other student hitches free ride.

But I did feel sorry for us, because we got literally no guidelines on our papers, and there was a huge disparity in the grading between instructors. Some instructors identified their expectations very clearly, while others refused to speak to the students.

Many a time I entertained the though of giving in, giving up on caring, and cheat. But then I decided that I would refused to let them turn me into someone I couldn't respect. I could at least graduate with my integrity intact. bleh, I'm getting flash backs and post traumatic syndrome. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to rant.

I seriously doubt that the girl "receiving" her answers from the girl behind her would study with me if I offered. It seems that it's much easier for her to just get the answers from the friend behind her! To some people they just do not want to put in the amount of time it requires to get an "A" honestly.

I never said I was TRYING to get rid of anyone. These two girls are actually pretty nice, but I DO NOT condone this kind of behavior. As another poster already stated, would you want someone like this caring for you in the hospital? People who cheat in school are more likely to cheat in the workplace. (like in a hospital, taking care of patients) They are looking for shortcuts!!! Plain and simple. I wouldn't want this kind of helathcare provider taking care of me!

Also, I am not trying to bring shame to anyone. That is why I sent an anonymous e-mail to my instructor, and did not mention any names. I just think he should be aware of what is happening in his classroom.

When people decide to go to school, especially for nursing or any other kind of healthcare field, they should be prepared to do the work, without shorcuts.Period!

BTW, it makes me wonder why you are so sympathetic towards cheaters?

Actually by saying nothing you've aided and abetted, and I'm sure they appreciate that "help." In the long run, they will have learned that dishonesty pays and will carry that lesson with them into the workforce. JMHO.

Certainly I'd be glad to help anyone and have when I was a student, that is being a team player. Encouraging one to do the right thing, instead of carrying the personal shame of being a cheat, that is being a team player.

look if you do your homework you would see that 75% of american college students admit to cheating at one time. so by what your saying and thinking only 25% of college students should still be in school. the others should be thrown out and forgotten. if you have ever cheated, maybe you took 11 items in the 10 item or less checkout, even if the checker said its ok, your a cheater and should not be a nurse. thats the black and white of it. not being sympathetic but realistic. like i said at first i think if your caught your out of that class. but the honorable thing to do is reach out them not tell on them. unless you signed a code of honor(which each code varies in its contence). one code of honor says "i will not leave a fallen Comrade behind" so if they cheat you should stay with them and not leave them behind right?

Umm, first of all, taking 11 items to the 10 item or less checkout lines is totally different than cheating on a test in college.Especially when you are trying to LEARN the material so that you will understand it when you have a real "live" patient who needs your knowledge because their "life" depends on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, your comparison is totally off base. That doesn't even compare. You are comparing apples to oranges.

You are also saying that it is "honorable" not to tell on them for cheating? WRONG!! Excuse me, but I do not want to be aiding and abetting cheaters, especially when I can get into the same trouble for covering up for them. They made their beds, they need to lie in them.

I'm all for helping the next person, especially if they are my "comrades", but there is such a thing as your own personal integrity. I just do not think that people should get by in life by cheating. And if they get caught, then hopefully they will learn a valuable lesson. That life is hard and you have to work hard to make it in this world.

I personally do not have ANY sympathy for people who cheat on tests. They need to work harder to learn and understand the material. Our school offers tutoring and study groups specifically for Anatomy and Physiology. There is NO excuse. I have attended those study groups and they really helped me understand certain material that I could not understand on my own.

I work very hard to maintain my "A". Others should do the same. End of story!!

BTW, I would offer to help ANYONE who asked or needed it. But that thing is that this girl has never asked anyone for help. The only thing I can say about her is that she's gonna have a hard time taking the NCLEX when the time comes. She only has herself to blame.

There will always be certain people who will get by in life by cheating and certain people who will condone it. Unfortunately, lives of patients will suffer at the hands of people like that.

you can play on semantics all you want. you can try to make things "black and white," when the truth of the matter is that rarely is anything "black or white," it's mainly shades of gray. no one person is perfect and we all have done things or made choices we regret.

"one code of honor says "i will not leave a fallen comrade behind" so if they cheat you should stay with them and not leave them behind right?" big difference between leaving a fallen comrade behind in battle and enabling a person to cheat.

loyal: faithful to one's oath, engagements,or obligations, faithful to any person or thing conceived as imposing obligations.

sorry i don't consider loyalty to agree with or go along with someone who is doing something wrong. i don't consider allowing one to cheat as having anything to do with loyalty. an act of a loyal friend would be to encourage the right thing and stand by that person when they do. as a student the obligation is to learn the material and pass the course on your own merit, it's also about being faithful to yourself and others.

honor: high public esteem, credit, fame, or glory; an exemplary sense of personal moral standards and conduct; a source or cause of credit or distinction; as to be an honor to one's family.

as a student, where's the honor in cheating? where's the honor in allowing it to go on?

honorable: worthy of being honored; motivated by principles of honor; conferring honor.

there is no honor in cheating, there is no honor in turning a blind eye. what makes one honorable is the way strive to live our lives and how we handle our mistakes.

sad numbers, but if your not part of the solution, your part of the problem. sounds more apathetic. jmho.

Very well said, Dusktildawn.

You go girl!!!!

thatoneguy, I noticed that you are an RN. Geesh, your certainly NOT setting a very good example for us "students" who hope to become nurses. Also, I would think that you wouldn't be supporting those that cheat. You should know better. Shame on you.

Help them? I've got enough to do doing my OWN work, i'm not going to help other just to keep them from cheating.

And if someone's cheating on tests, makes you wonder what else they'll cheat on.
