Chamberlain Houston - Please Help!

Published

Hello!

I am going to be applying to Chamberlain in Houston, and I have a couple of specifc questions that I was hoping someone could help me with.

My first question is about GPA. I have a pretty low college GPA, but it's above the 2.75 requirement. I'm sitting at a 2.9. I'm studying for the HESI and hoping I can get a great grade to, hopefully, make up for some of the low GPA. My other question is this - am I allowed to use my HS GPA instead of college? I graduated in 2009 and have a much higer GPA. I never took the SAT or ACT, so I didn't know if you had to have taken one of those if you want to use your high school GPA.

My other question is regarding the fees. I'm trying to calculate how much I will actually be spending. I'm in a horrible place as far as federal aid. I'm under 24, unmarried, no kids, so I have to supply them with my dad's income. He makes a lot, but most of it goes in alimony, and he can't help me with school. So, due to his income, I can't qualify for anything besides Stafford loans. He also is the only person who will cosign for me, and we got denied.

I'm transferring in either nine or 12 credits, so I tried to add up how much the tuition will cost. I'm not including their estimate for books, because I plan on buying them somewhere cheaper. I'm also not including the app fee, background check, or insurance cost into my calculation. Just the $665 for my first seven credits, the $200 for each of the last 113 credits, and the $2,700 charge for all of the service fees per session. This brings my total to just under 30k. Am I doing something wrong? I keep hearing people say it's an 80-90k program, and I'm just not coming up with those figures. I hope I'm adding this up right, because if I can qualify for their last resort loan and use my Stafford loans, I'm golden.

Thank you for reading this. :)

Yes you are calculating incorrectly. The fees assessed are per session: $665 for creds 1-6 $200 for 7+. So if you were taking 9 credits in a session (there are 2 sessions in a semester) then you would pay (665 X 6= 3990) + (200 * 3=600)= 4590 for the session not including student service fees, books etc. Just tuition. For someone only transferring in 9-12 credits, your total would most likely be in the 70,000-80,000 range.

I'm going to give you some advice, you can take it or tell me to shove it, but I do mean well. With your low gpa, I would consider an LVN program. It's a good way to slowly ease into nursing, get some experience, and find out if you really want to be a nurse. At one of the local community colleges, shouldn't cost any more than 9K for 3 semesters. The reason I am giving you this advice is because I personally know 2 people who have shelled out over 30K to this program, only to realize that it's not for them. They are now trying to get into other programs, and none of the credits are transferrable. Consider that at any other school, you can transfer credits as long as you're not in the last few semesters. There's a reason they're called "for profit".

CRNA school, which is the top of the food chain for nursing costs 90K, and they come out making 140K/yr easily. You'll pay close to 70K? New grad RNs come out making 55K/yr, so there is no return of investment in the first few years, unless you stay with your dad for the next 3-4 years. The loans are at a higher interest rate, also.

There's another way to become a nurse, LVN-RN-BSN, it just may take a little longer, but it will be a heck of a lot cheaper, and you can work as a nurse after finishing LVN school. Please don't fall into this trap. Good luck.

Chamberlain is pricey.. If you aren't transferring any credits especially. As far as transferring credits from chamberlain to other schools.. The credits in fact do transfer. I've checked into other Houston schools including Texas womens, UTHSC, and UTA. If you do plan to continue your education I would check with the school you plan to apply to first to verify that the credits transfer.

In order to use your high school GPA, you must not have over 27 college credits (I believe, I may be wrong) all of the information is on the website.

Hello I am also a Pre-Nursing student. I plan on applying to The Chamberlain School of Nursing in September. I am a member of Phi Theta Kappa with a GPA of 3.79; I have 65 hours in coursework completed and ill have my ASSOCIATES DEGREE IN ARTS in August. I took my HESI exam today and I made an 84 on the Reading, 82 on the Math, 82 on the Grammar, 80 on the Vocabulary and a 92 on the A&P section. I have a 3.5 for my Nursing GPA and a 3.45 GPA in coursework hours. With all of this being said I just want to know this: is it enough to at least put me on the waiting list? I'm just so anxious I cannot wait to find out! Its either this school or West Texas A&M. Send plenty feedback Pre-Nursing students and good luck!! Patrick

Patrick,

There is no waiting list and you should get in easily!! I had a 3.6 GPA and a hesi score of 86 and got in!

Good luck!

Hey! So, feedback: have a 3.5 GPA, transferring in 67 credits, no prior degree, planning on taking the HESI in August, and going for the September 2nd start date. What are my chances?

Also, what are the prereqs to this school? Anyone have a link? Can't find it anywhere!

Your chances are good! There are no pre-reqs.. They can all be done at chamberlain.

Ok I'm lost...I talked to the advisor "...." at the Houston campus and she told me the September class was already chosen because it's past the deadline -_- however...on the Nursing CAS website they state that I still have until August 1st. They go on to say that Chamberlain's BSN program will begin in September...can someone please clear the elephant in the room for me -_- ---> did Chamberlain choose September students early or is Elizabeth informing me with false "accidental" information? :( I want to know this before I pay my nursing application fee!

Thanks

Not sure if this helps but I applied in June for September start date. There may be more people who applied sooner. I would call the school for a clearer understanding.
