Challenging the LVN CA State Boards.

U.S.A. California

Published

Hello Everybody!!! Well i am posting this for my girlfriend. Well here is her problem. My girlfriend went to school at Summit career college here in california. Her school divided the LVN program in 4 terms each 3 months long. Her last day was today and she got evaluated and missed the passing grade of 80 percent (too mee 80 is way to high) by 1 she got a 79 and they are not goin to let her pass, this is her 4th term. She has the option of retaking term 4 but doesnt not start till january. She is thinking of just challenging the boards but has no idea how to apply or if she is qualified to. Also if she does challange the board and pass and get lisensed is her lisensed limited to an extent any way because she did not pass her schooling? And will it be harder for her to get a job because of this?

] This might be a negative response but c my experience c my state board they are unbending about everything all rules are written in stone and they will stick by there guns. Have your friend talk to a school counselor and see if they have any ideas also see if she can find someone else who might be in the same boat I am sure they are out there. Keep us informed because this is interesting to find out how other states work.

sorry to disappoint you, but 80% is standard for nursing schools. you may think it's too high but we deal with peoples' lives so the standards need to be high.

as for challenging the boards, she needs to contact the ca bon and ask how to go about it, but first check out this site: http://www.bvnpt.ca.gov/factvn.htm . she may be able to find the answer there.

my advice: repeat the semester. she may have only failed by 1 point, but she failed. to now challenge the boards is to have a "screw you" attitude toward the school. if she challenges the boards and gets her license, she will not be able to work in any other state should she someday decide to move.

And I will make an addition to what the others above have posted:

A person must meet the educational requirements to be able to sit for any license in any state to work as an LPN/LVN. We no longer have state boards, but the NCLEX-PN and it requires permission from a state BON or equivalent to be able to write it. Not passing a semester will not let her sit for the exam.

And the only people that can actually challenge the NCLEX-PN exam for CA licensure are those that were trained as medical corpsmen in the military for three years. That is he only exception being made, and they cannot endorse their license to any other state.

She is going to have to complete that last semester to be able to have a chance of taking the needed exam. She will not be permitted to write the exam for CA or for any other state, so not even a limited license is even on the table.
