I'm new to the site, but I have a question. I'm a recently honorably discharged Army Medic, and came across some information. California allows Veteran Medics to take the LVN state licensing exam without getting formal schooling. Does anyone know if the state of Maryland allows the same thing? If not, does California allow an out of state Veteran Medic to come and test there?

Most states do not offer this option. Additionally, should you choose to go to CA to test, it is unlikely that you would be able to endorse the license to another state- many require for licensure completion of a nursing program.

Former Navy Corpsman here. Honestly, I suggest just using your GI Bill and getting your nursing degree. Challenging the LVN in Cali was too much of a hassle, and I believe you need to work in Cali. I'm in Tennessee and have one more year of school to go, but I'm so grateful for my education benefits! Don't know what state you're in, but there are many programs around the country that are offering very accelerated nursing programs to prior service medics/corpsman. I would have definitely done that if there were any close to me. Hopefully, there is a program near you. Good Luck!

My best friend was a medic in the Army we were stationed at Ft Devens MA. When we got out I already was a nurse but she took her nursing exam in Colorado. She did have to jump thorough hoops. I think MA allows for this as well it is an unusual unknown benefit. I suggest you look at Excelsior College as although it does cost some monies you can send all your transcripts and they will then review and you may meet for their LPN certificate. It is an accredited college not sure if it is regional though and if it is it is a huge bonus to you. Also the military at Ft Sam Houston may have answers to your questions.

I'm pretty sure that...option 3 is it called? restricts the licensee to California only.

Excelsior will admit qualified military medics for an associates in nursing which gives eligibility to sit for the NCLEX-RN in most, not all, states. CA does not recognize graduates from Excelsior. It's a challenging self directed program and neither quick nor easy. Excelsior does not award a credential leading to lpn licensure
