Challenge LPN Exam

Nurses LPN/LVN

Updated:   Published

Has anyone successfully challenged the LPN exam after completing 3 semesters of an ADN program ? I'm looking for advice as I'm interested in this option .

Likely depends on the state you are in, but I haven’t heard of challenging the exam. With my ADN program/state I was able to complete the PN-NCLEX after the first two semesters and passed without much difficulty. I don’t know if that helps.

Hello! I was 16months ABSN program in Pennsylvania State. I failed on critical care, the last& final semester. Now I live in New York. I don’t know what to do? I cannot retake critical care because I failed psychiatric nursing on my second semester, and passed when I retake it.
please let me know if I have any chances to take NCLEX-PN exam in New York? My GPA total is 2.7

Unfortunately , NY doesn’t offer the opportunity to challenge for licensure . I know Florida and a few other states allow it though.

What did you use to prepare for PN-NCLEX and pass?

Hello I Challenged the Florida Board of nursing  and passed on the first try. I used UWorld and Mark K.

Does anyone know if you can transfer your license after successfully passing the NCLEX-PN?

Hi! I also wanted to know this information. I am New York State resident, Can I challenge the board of NCLEX-PN? And if I pass in florida can I transfer or work in New York?

I went to ABSN program in Pittsburgh (unfortunately failed out from the program a day before graduation for Critical care final exam score was way too low I couldn’t make it), my GPA was 2.7.

From the NY BON:

To be licensed and registered as an LPN in New York State, you must:

  • be of good moral character;
  • be at least seventeen years of age;
  • be a high school graduate (or the equivalent);
  • graduate from a nursing education program acceptable to NYSED;
  • complete New York State required infection control coursework;
  • pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) or another license examination acceptable to NYSED; and,
  • apply for an LPN license with NYSED.

Education Programs

You must graduate from a nursing education program that meets one of the five criteria below.

  1. A nursing education program registered by NYSED as license qualifying for LPN; or,
  2. A nursing education program registered by NYSED as license qualifying for RN; or,
  3. A nine month or longer education program offered by the U.S. Armed Forces which is acceptable to NYSED; or,
  4. A nursing education program located in another state or U.S. Territory, if approved by the licensing authority of the state or U.S. Territory as preparation for practice as an LPN or RN. (U.S. territories include: Puerto Rico, Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands and American Samoa); or,
  5. A general nursing education program located in a country outside of the United States or its territories, which is acceptable to NYSED.

Emphasis mine. It would appear that you would not be able to endorse a license obtained via challenging the exam to NY as it states you must graduate from a nursing education program.
