Hi everyone this is my first post. I've been lurking on here for months now and decided to finally join. I was wondering if anyone has heard anything about Chaffey College in southern California and if you know how long the wait list is to get into the ADN program. Thanks
i have heard lots of bad things about chaffey. One of the students dropped and did her BSN at csusb instead. she said the instructors favor certain students and if your not one of them they will give you a hard time. Yes the passing rate is 100% BUT only 40 people on average take the exam. What happens to the other 40? Therefore is the drop out rate 50%?
Hi cori-
I am reposting this : "We ended up with a graduating class of 21....from the original 44, i think about 14-15 or so made it through...and this is pretty typical of chaffey's program."
Seems like 60% dropped or get dropped! Yikes.
I overheard this girl talking in my class about the nursing (rn) program. She mentioned somewhat of what your csusb friend said about the program.
I am in the program. Now granted I am only in the 1st sem, but so far everyone is nice. They do seem very no nonsense. However it also seems that if you show up ready to do your part they are willing to do the same.
Always take a look at who you are getting info from when you hear something bad about a nursing program, or anything/anyone for that matter. More often than not the person has either failed or is not doing as well as they expected they would. Nursing is not a clear cut, one answer profession...and some people just think that way. I have met several people who have bad mouthed Chaffey, and ironically every single one of them failed out of the program. Of course it was "not their fault" and the instructors were "just trying to fail them". Take what they say lightly. I think this can be said for any program, if you are willing to do what needs to be done you will get through. This may not be the time of your life, but it is just the means to an end. If you want to be a nurse, and that is your passion then who cares what SOMEONE ELSE thinks about a program. It will be what you make of it.
Put a smile on your face, and just remember this is only 2 years of your life. There is always going to be a hard teacher, or an unfair one, or a student you just want to hit. Reality is, that is life. Chaffey may be hard, but so is being a nurse. They are not spending the next two years of our lives preparing us to fail. Do what needs to be done, and in a few short years it will be worth every second of your hard work!!!
PS~ The best part of Chaffey is knowing that the second I graduate I can test for my boards and be CERTAIN I will pass, because that is what they are preparing me for!
yes i agree with you 100% and the people whom have told me about chaffey they graduated with highest honors at cal state but they dropped out of the chaffey program .... but one thing is for sure ADN programs well here in the inland empire give the student a better "hands on" experience as in compared to the csu's. .... but what i still dont understand and it does not matter who says look at the nclex passing rates.... only 41 people took the exam .... what happened to the other half? usually when some one starts a nursing program they are pretty prepared to start the program especially at chaffey since the pre reqs are so demanding( its only ADN)
I was wondering if maybe someone can give me their advice about getting a C vs getting a W... I have been going to chaffey for 3yrs and am just now in Microbiology... The drop deadline with a W is TOMORROW!!!
In micro lecture I can get a C for sure but would need a 99% on my final to get a B.
I'm not really sure about my Lab.. I thnk I can get a B.
I got an A in both anatomy and physio.. Altho I had to drop anatomy one because of a
family emergency. (so that's already 1 W!)
what is better? Stay and get the C or drop and get a W and then get an A nxt time around?
I AM FREAKING OUT!!! how badly have I ruined my chances of getting in? Is it easier to apply to a WAY more expensive private school?
I keep hearing different things.. Oh and my cummulative GPA right now is a 3.1. if that changes anything.
It depends on where you will be applying.
Most RN schools will only take one repeat and I know for sure that Chaffey said they will take into account how many W's are on your transcript. One W is OK.
I took all my science preqs at Chaffey with a 3.48 science GPA but did not apply there. According to what you said about your grades, you might end with a 3.38 science gpa. Chaffey pick their students based on random selection. As long as you meet their requirements, which you do, you should be fine but just hope you are the lucky person to be picked. My friend knew someone with a 4.0 science gpa and didn't get in Chaffey after the 3rd try.
Mtsac is all lottery and you can only apply once. It doesn't matter if you are a 4.0 or 2.5 science gpa. They take only one repeat but the waitlist is very very long. RCC is all competition and is based on points. I have a 3.48 science gpa and 3.5 cum gpa (based on their gpa pts) total of 80/100 pts but did not get into their school.
If you will be applying for Chaffey, i say A,A, C/B is fine. I would definetly call the nursing department and ask how they base their selection to be sure. But if you will be applying to other competition schools like Citrus/RCC etc...you might not have a very very good chance getting in, maybe their alternate's list. I know for sure the counselor at Citrus told me those ppl that got in have a 3.7 science gpa.
Also, I think it is easier to get into a private school. I will not be applying for private school bc it is not worth the money. I am hearing it cost about 60K a year for the BSN @ a private school so expect avg about 120K just for your RN when it's is like 4-5K at city. I personally believe Private schools are for ppl with options like they don't have the best gpa and/or they don't want to play the waiting game.
Also, when you think about it, an F and W are kinda the same. W doesn't' change your gpa, and a F does. But if you repeat the F with an A, you are okay. I remember Chaffey telling us that they will look at your W's and Repeats.
Like I said, it all depends on where you will be applying. I would do my research with other schools asap. PS. I know somebody that had two repeats but she haven't applied yet. Her chances are slim and she can only apply to Chaffey. IF you get a C in micro , you can't repeat it.
if applying to Chaffey, I would stay and get a C/B.
Sorry, I wouldn't want to be in your shoes right now :) It is pretty stressed thinking of what to do. I am sure you are quite aware that you can't get a W or a C prior taking mirco lab/lec. I know I struggled the most in micro because it was very time consuming.
I hope you the best. Finishing micro is just the start of the stress of getting into an RN school :) take care.
Out of 44 only 14-15 pass? That's insane! Reading these posts I'm seriously considering moving to another school. It is hard to even find a good teacher at Chaffey as it is. Unfortunately most community colleges are hard to get classes when you apply period! Congratulations on all who passed!
The recent graduating class finished with 50% of the original class. A friend of mine went to Mt SAC a few years ago, and I asked her what the percentage of originals was, and she said 50%. SO here is my theory on this...you can go to Chaffey and have a 50/50 chance of passing, but if you do they have a 100% pass rate on the boards, or you can go elsewhere and have the same 50/50 chance and get more like an 87% pass rate. It's the same everywhere, you just do what they ask and look at this as one more obstacle in getting to your career. You would go insane if you looked at pass rates, and nice vs mean teachers. Everyone is going to have something to say, positive or negative, about their school, just consider who you are talking to and figure you would hear the same information about any other school out there. :)
Reading allll of these comments quite frankly scares the you know what out of me!! . I am currently at Chaffey and am on my last two science classes and am so bummed because I am nervous that I won't get into their program on the first try. Does anyone have an opinion on how long it could take to get into the program?? I don't want to have to wait 3 times before I am accepted. I have heard the same things about getting into a program on other campuses. That it is virtually impossible. Unless you go the private route in which case you are paying an arm and a leg for it. The only positive to paying that much is that you walk away with your Bachelors instead of just you Associates. Any input would be great
I was in your shoes a few months ago. I was positive, but still tried to prepare myself in case I was denied into the program. I applied Spring (April) 2011 and got accepted. It was my first time applying. I truly believe it is a lottery system because my science GPA is not very high (3.1). I did however complete all my science pre-reqs AND my general ed pre-reqs (GPA 3.5). This gives you a major advantage to those who do not complete general pre reqs. At the Nursing meeting held one a month at Chaffey, we were informed that only 100+ out off 300 applicants actually complete their general education, therefore the 100+ are the ones that are included in the lottery. That makes one's odd roughly 40/100, which isn't too bad. Out of 12 students I know that applied, 7 got in and 4 are on the waitlist. All of us did our pre reqs at Chaffey. Good Luck to you! And please know that if you do not get accepted, do not get discouraged. Be positive and know that you will become an RN, even if it means testing your patience.
Good Morning!!!
I signed up for this site hoping I could get some information from people that have gone thru this before. First and foremost I will be applying for chaffey RN program in April 2012, but I been hearing that the odds of getting in on the first try are pretty slim. Not sure wether I should apply at other schools just to play it safe. I've heard from a few people that have been applying semester after semester and keep on getting rejected. I have a 3.0 in my science classes and 3.38 on all the prereqs. I wonder since I dont have the best GPA it will decrease my chances of getting accepted much more slim. Any feed back is greatly appreciated. Thanks

No. But I know some private schools do. I found them on rn.gov
