Cedars-Sinai RN New Grad 2011

Published

Just wanted to know if anyone here got an e-mail invitation on Cedars-Sinai RN New Grad Program. I had my phone interview with them on December 29th. I received my e-mail today inviting me to the hiring event Open House for the Program on January 19th. I'm soooo nervous. It's been almost a year since I graduated and I finally got my first in-person interview! It's been so hard on all of us graduates! Let's hope for the best! :D

I called HR today and they told me that it's taking them longer to select and to call than they thought, so hang tight, they might not get through all the calls until next Friday. They said only one woman is making the calls so it's going to take her quite a few days to get though everyone.

Thanks!! Bless the woman making the calls that's a lot to have to do...

Anyone for medsurg?

That was my pick,too

Hi Willowlove you are so awesome for calling and updating all of us! Thank you. Did they mean they won't even be done by this Fri June 24 but actually still calling people up to July 1? I wasn't sure if I understood right.

You're welcome :) Yeah she said next Friday. It's going to take another week.

Thanx Willowlove!! for the info. that kinda calms me down!

I was thinking that I had no chance since it's almost 2 weeks now since the interview...

But if only 1 person is doing all the calls...that is very reasonable.

I'm just so anxious! every time my phone vibrates my heart skips a beat!!!! It's taking so long~~~lol

And congrats to the people who got the calls!!! yeyy!! and thank you for the all the info that you guys have provided!!! you guys are awesome!

I guess i'll have to keep waiting for either a call or email....

Hi everyone, I got the call this week that I will be starting with the July 11th cohort. :) I am beyond excited. I'll be moving from the Bay Area and potentially looking for a (female) roommate if anyone is interested. PM me if you are. Hope you all hear good news soon!!!

My daughter who rec'd offer is from WA state. So little time to pull things together for a July 11 start date.

She received offer Monday conditional on supplying & their verifying 5 references, they'll mail drug test & conduct criminal backround check. So if test arrives in mail by tomorrow, she sends back & they receive by Tuesday-ish.....assuming all is ok they then mail contract for signing Thursday & she receives Monday the 27th & mails back so they receive the 30th. At best, it seems like 5 business days to move 2 states away. I'm surprised at the short time frame between offer & start date.

It does make sense given the time frame that they're hiring for cohort #1 first - afterall, there's not much time before they start.

On this thread aren't there about 10 people who have receive an offer for this position?

She also has a phone interview scheduled next week for Stanford....(interviewed with one in Texas, didn't get offer, interview 2 WA state.....apply about 15 others....) They do phone interview then if "passed", move forward to next phase -- ultimately for starting in Sept. But if Cedars comes thru, there won't be the option to compare.......so take what's offered first? Also, so many of you have graduated, then taken months to take NCLEX -- why wait so long? Is there a strategy advantage?

One thing I see if daughter's situation is, she graduated a month ago, then NCLEXed & fly to LA and just arrived back here one week ago. To start in 2 weeks......sounds exhausting. Is that why some of you paused be taking exam.....to give yourself a break? Might be a smart strategy!

Cedars has 960ish applicants for 60 to 90 jobs, in a facility that has around 950 beds --- and if they do this 3 times a year, they hire a lot of new grad nurses!

Stanford has applicants of 1000 for 18 New Grad jobs ...

WA state hospital she interviewed with said they "let go" of around 6 nurses in their New Grad program who couldn't multi task quickly

Cedars being "private" is an advantage -- they hire more people.

Maybe Shriners in Sacramento would follow similarly - I don't know.

I know my daughter doesn't look at this thread. It would make her nervous & anxious. She just keeps running & going for walks & working on a quilt. She's wondering if she should start sending out more app's.....Do you consider getting a contingent offer "good enough" to stop working the system? Or keep working on it? When she called her preceptor, she was advised to work all the situations she has in hand, i.e. forgo a week long white water rafting trip to stay in town for a WA state interview. This whole process is surprising!

You have a lot of good questions being a mother looking out for her daughter...

1st things 1st... about the NCLEX, I took a review, then moved all of my belongings from my school back home (about 5 hours away) and was one of the first in my class to sit down for the test (I JUST FOUND OUT I PASSED TODAY!!!). It's best to do it straight out of nursing school no matter how busy you are. There's no amount of studying that can prepare you for that test. Plus the longer you wait the more anxiety you have to deal with. Last but not least, when you actually have your license A LOT more opportunities are available job wise.

2nd - it's completely up to her if she decides to keep applying. Moving from WA to the heart of LA is a big change. The hospital does have a very good reputation but the atmosphere is going to shock her. I've lived in San Diego for the past 3 years and the area around Cedar's still shocks me!!! It's too many people and a different up tight environment. Not to mention the cost of living is extremely high!

However, the contingent offer seems like a for sure offer assuming she passes the drug test and can supply 5 references which I'm sure she'll do fine on both. Like you said it's hard to find jobs right now. It's just whether she needs a break or wants to explore different options. I say she has about 3 weeks left to make a career decision so apply everywhere she can and then make the best decision for her career since this move is a life changing event.

Good luck in her decision and I hope you can provide her with the best advice and support her in whatever she chooses!

I know of 2 people that calls today for job offers to start with the July 25 cohort. The last names begin with P and S. The HR person said the 3rd cohort begins in August but they are choosing people that are just graduating this month (?) to give them time to take NCLEX.

As long as NCLEX is taken before start date and they can verify it online, you are fine. If you get an offer for the July 25 cohort you should have NCLEX done a week or 2 prior.

The HR woman said out of 270 interviews - a total of 80 people will be offered jobs. They definitely are not done calling yet b/c they didn't finish the July 25 cohort offers or even begin calling the Aug cohort people. So everyone hang tight!!!

She also said that all new hires will begin on a Med-surg floor working the night shift.. Which pays $7 more an hour weekdays and $9 more an hour weekends. Starting pay $33.50 an hour for BSN. After 13 weeks, you have the opportunity to apply to work day shift and/or to an alternate floor IF there is an opening.

There is a 2 year commitment contract with the hosptial since they are training you. But you are not stuck on Med-surg for 2 years (unless you are unable to transfer)

A few months back, I heard that a/some hospitals in Oakland were starting a new program to bring New Grads into training program if they forego a salary for the training time, i.e. roughly 12 weeks. Makes sense, with hospitals needing to spend $60K - $100K per each New Grad. It might be feasible if a person could live for nearly free (i.e. home). It sure is quite on this thread now!

You all have invested so much in yourselves, and that investment is well worth it!!! You will reap the benefit of this training for the rest of your lives. How fantastic to be empowered with this knowledge that you're eager and willing to share!!

There is a school in Southern Arizona that offered free tuition for nursing school but you had to commit to working for certain hospitals for 2 to 3 years. The pay was less but no loans to pay back and good experience.

After our first job, we will have so many more options. But for now us new grads have to take what we can get. We have to pay our dues like everyone else :uhoh3: The night shift scares me b/c I don't sleep days but if I was able to make it through a 1 year accelerated program I think I can handle nights for a few months to a year.

I am extremely happy for those who got hired :) but right now although I have not received a rejection Im starting to feel anxious I know some of you said they are still calling people but I wish one of them was me ;)... Just venting guys need to release some anxiety :)...
