Cedars-Sinai New Grad Summer 2013

Published

Just thought it would be helpful to post a new thread for the upcoming new grad program starting this summer. I've seen the thread for the program last year and wanted to see if anyone was one of the first 250 who applied for it this year. I applied for cohort #1 and got a phone interview last week and the gentleman said that I'd receive an e-mail within 1-2 weeks. I've also heard of people getting rejection emails as well without a phone interview. Anyone have additional info they'd like to share? Good luck to all us new grads out there!

anyone know any good apartments?

I was wondering the same thing! From my initial brief search it seems every apartment near cedars is $2,000/month! I'll be relocating from the Bay Area so I don't know the area that well. What are the affordable apartments/neighborhoods close to cedars?

Congrats to everyone who got calls :)

Have you guys looked at apartments around Culver City/Ladera Heights? The price may be a little better.

Excited to start cohort #2 in July!!! :D Good luck to everyone applying to cohort #3!

Hi guys. I used to work at Cedars and I live less than a mile away from it. I know the neighborhoods and Cedars well. Here's some basic advice:

Cedars is in Beverly Hills. Most apartments anywhere within a 5 mile radius are going to be in the 2K+/mo. range. That usually does not include a city parking permit which is also expensive. If you do find a cheaper rental it usually means there's something wrong or really awful about it. Landlords here can smell newbies miles away and are known for scamming people. Be careful.

Neighborhoods that are on the West side that are reasonable: Mar Vista, Culver City, Palms, Cheviot Hills, West Hollywood, Sawtelle area.

Ladera Heights/Westchester are way too far away. Beverlywood/Castle Heights are way too expensive. Pico/Robertson is close and you might be able to find something around there but it's a crap shoot.

Don't be tempted by living in the Valley or Silver Lake or Koreatown. There's lots of cheap places listed in these areas but they are far as heck from Cedars, you'll spend your life in traffic and they're crowded with hipster jerks. (Well not the Valley - -- thats crowded with plain old jerks).

Anyway. PM me with any silly questions. I'm a West side L.A. expert. :)

I wasn't accepted into Cedars, but if I was, I would probably choose a place around Culver City or Palms. They're affordable, pretty safe, and have the added bonus of having some great restaurant options & fun things to do in the area. I wouldn't completely write off living in the SFV. If you have a family, it's a great place to raise kids, and neighborhoods like Sherman Oaks, Studio City, and Toluca Lake aren't too far from Cedars. In reality, pretty much wherever you live in LA (unless you live right across the street from your destination), you're going to find yourself in traffic, so make a great traffic mixtape, and enjoy the ride :)

Hey Sandy! Did you find out your unit soon after as well? And does the physical they require need to be done through Cedars or through your personal physician? Thank you for the help! Very much appreciated :)

I had my physical yesterday (done at Cedars) and signed my contract and we still don't know what unit we are assigned. They said we would find out during orientation. Also as an FYI they make you do a TB test so you'll need to go back 48hrs later after your physical appt to have it read. And they require a 2-step TB test so it needs to be repeated in a week unless you've had a TB done within the last year they will accept that. Just a heads up for those of you relocating.

Koreatown isn't far from Cedars and there are some great old buildings there. I personally like the neighborhood and would definitely consider living there.

Koreatown is CHOCK FULL of bedbugs, there is no parking except the street for most buildings, and it's so crowded, everyone is on top of each other. I have had three friends move there and break their leases just to get out. One was mugged walking the 4 blocks home from her street parking spot; one endured a summer in a "cute vintage deco walk-up" that was a top floor hotbox with mold & a management company that prohibited window AC units; all three ended up having to junk half their belonging due to bedbugs. It's the same story at PARK LA BREA, too.

Anyone hearing anything yet on Cohort 3??

Yes. Just had a phone interview yesterday for cohort 3, keeping my fingers crossed.

I just heard from people who works at cedars that anything close to the hospital is ok. Look around burton way and also perhaps craigslist. I found an apartment walking distance to the hospital.
