You're missing the point. A picture can't tell us if sterile technique was maintained. That is the more important issue than whether you hold the catheter like a pencil or a cigarette.

So, that's my feedback from this part of the world.

The correct way is whatever way you don't breach sterile technique. Both of the ways pictured are a risk especially for the open end to brush up against pt's legs/body, etc. Why not connect it to the collection device first and then not have an open end to concern yourself with?

Or, if you have no option but to hold the open end of the catheter while it isn't connected to anything (as both pics show), why not enclose it in the hand instead of having it hang out laterally or inferiorly? Since gloves are sterile, there is no reason not to secure the open end of the catheter to the palm of the hand with digits 3/4/5 while using 1/2 to direct the tip of the catheter.

Why does it coming separate matter? You can still assemble it before you begin.

....and while you're at it, kink it temporarily so you don't have urine going everywhere.

You do have a point as to some of the videos are in correct or done differently depending on who and what.
