Cath lab vs EP Lab

Hello my fellow nurses! I need expert advise from reputable individuals. I have been a nurse now 7 years specializing in SICU/MICU and last 3 years ER. I recently interviewed with the Cath Lab and EP Lab and was offered both positions. I am now locked in a situation of which to choose. Both positions offer the same schedule which is 7am-5pm 4 weekdays, however, Cath lab you’re on call one night a week and 1 weekend a month. Whereas, with EP no on calls no weekends and no holidays. Which position is more interesting and which would you go with? Thanks everyone!

Any way you can observe each lab in action?  Meet the staff, see how they interact, get a 'feel' for the department?  You might 'fit' more in one than in the other.  If you have never observed a cath or an EP procedure, you would be wise to do so.  Perhaps some procedures will intrigue you more than others.

Do you know the MDs involved?

Do they share the same manager?

Both areas are fascinating, IMO.  Myself, I prefer cath lab over EP.  I tell patients, "ya got yer plumbing, and ya got yer electrical.  Cath lab is plumbing [of the heart], EP is the electrical side.'

Let us know what you decide! ?

I've only worked cath lab so this is just one side of the coin but some things I love about it, lots of different procedures to learn about,  cardiogenic shock management is very fun! Call back pay is sweet, lots of free food from different company reps, holidays and weekends off mostly.

The bad: Radiation exposure. That's pretty much the only thing I can think of Haha!
