Hello all!!
I was just curious if anyone applied to CCHS for Fall 2009?! I am anxiously waiting for a letter in the mail, and was wondering if any other applicants have received a letter of acceptance or denial yet!! I'm crossing my fingers I will get in, I had HORRIBLE high school grades but am finishing up my Medical Assisting degree and have straight A's in all of those courses. Hopefully they will take that into consideration!
Also I would love to hear from anyone who attended CCHS - how competitive was it to get in, do they have a waiting list, what GPA you had when you applied. Also i'm very curious about how difficult the school is! Any information is greatly appreciated!!!!
From a CCHS grad (May, 2005)
I applied to the pre-nursing program and was late with my application for the first time that this was offered, but was admitted to the January, 2003 pre-nursing program. When I accepted the January spot, my husband and I went to the school with all the necessary paperwork. When I asked what I needed to do to start nursing school in August, 2003, my academic records were reviewed on the spot. My ACT score was high and my HS GPA was 4.0. I was accepted on the spot for a spot in the August class without even going through pre-nursing. I was floored! Life-long dream was being fulfilled and I couldn't comprehend it! I'm glad my husband with me - I was in total shock!
Yes, they have a huge waitlist. But, even as the first classes were starting, people were being accepted. There were those who declined their seat or some of the pre-nursing students did not make it or people simply move away. Don't get discouraged just yet. Keep on plugging and keep taking classes you need to take and do your best to get good grades in those classes. CPCC is a good way to get classes you need - if you think you may want to get your BSN, go ahead and take any of the non-nursing classes you may need.
If you really want to become a nurse, keep on! It's all worth it at the end of the day.:)
WarEagle,
That is such an awesome story, I am definitely jealous!
I was a terrible high school student (I graduated in 2004) I mainly made C's and D's. Unfortunately I cannot go back and change the decisions I made when I was 16, which sucks because no matter what I have to send in those grades no matter where I apply. I took a few pre-req nursing courses, made some C's in those, and then got really serious about pursuing nursing. After I got turned down from PSON, I registered for a CNA course, and passed the state exam. Since I didn't feel like I could spend anymore time or money working on just nursing pre-reqs (I don't have an undergraduate degree) I felt like I had to do something just in case i never got into nursing school (as a back up so i could work) so i decided to do the next best thing- Medical Assisting. Luckily I am making straight A's and really am trying to redeem myself GPA-wise from high school AND show CCHS that I have experience in the medical profession, have made the grades, and can do the work. I just don't know how I will compete against people with a superb academic history in high school, or people with bachelor's degress. I almost wish they did an interview process to see how passionate I am about the nursing profession. I'm so anxious and ready to do this and I am scared I am going to be let down.
Hearing that they have a waiting list is definitely a positive thing. If I am put on a waiting list, and don't grab a spot for the fall, will I have a spot for the spring? I'm not sure how all of that works.
Do you have any suggestions for me?? Any advice is greatly appreciated!!!
And... did you like going to CCHS?? was it hard/impossible?? Are the instructors good? and does it help to have the sciences out of the way before starting? (ap1 and 2 , and micro?)
CCHS is a terrific school. I liked most of the instructors, there's always one or two you wont' like/get along with. I would definitely suggest any non-nursing courses (a & p, english, psych, micro, etc) out of the way so all you'll have is your nursing class. Your nursing class per semester is plenty to handle. That's what I did. I only had two non-nursing classes in nursing school, making those semesters a little more challenging.
Nursing school is hard no matter where you go. It's a whole new mindset. It's not enough to just memorize information, you have to think things through, look at the whole picture and know what to do with the information you have.
It's important to know where ever you go what the NCLEX pass rate for that school. CCHS has a greater than 95% pass rate on the first try at boards.
Good luck!

That was my overall college gpa at UNCC. My science gpa was around a 3.5-3.6 due to a C in A&P I. So, like I said make A's in all your sciences. It's been nearly 10 years since I graduated hs and my grades/sat were HORRIFIC. That could be a reason why I was not accepted. Then again that was so long ago and you can't judge a person's prior hs academic history:down: vs. current college academic history:up:.
I was in the same situation you guys are in. I felt anxious and nervous about getting into nursing school. Try to apply to as many nursing schools around town and "get in where you fit in." Don't fixate on just one nursing school, this will bring on further frustration :banghead:if you don't get accepted.
Remember that you are competing for a spot that accepts 50-70 student's which has hundreds of applicants per semester/year. If you fail, just keep on trying and don't give up. I know I almost did. :wink2:
