Nursing Students General Students

Hi -

I have a BS in BUSINESS and now 10 yrs later am going to start taking pre-reqs for Nursing.

Am VERY excited but NERVOUS beyond belief. I never grew up with the sciences being my strong suit and because my BS is in Business, i have never even taken Bio or Chem at a college level.

People have told me that "older" students are different. That i will do fine. Maybe i couldnt have done it if i tried at 18 but now i'm in my 30's and more dedicated.

Would really LOVE to hear back from folks in similar situations. WOuld love to hear that you are doing great and would even like to hear that its a major struggle. I want to know!

I started by to school in my late 20s and finished in my 30s. I was definately more focused on the goal at that age than I was fresh out of high school.

I have no prior experience in anything science. I have wanted to be a nurse since I was 13 or 14, and I made an attempt to start college and work my way towards getting into nursing at the age of 19. I am grateful that the whole thing fell through, and I became pregnant w/my son. I know now that I was way too immature, and I would have royally screwed up my chances of having a nursing career at the time. 7 years has made all the difference. Even though I have no experience in anything science/medical related, I know I have the drive and focus to learn anything that is thrown my way. i will be through with the LVN program in August of 2005, and hope to be a graduate in 2007...that would make me 30 by the time I am done. Not bad at all:)

watch out for me - if you're in any of my classes in the dallas area my plan (my hope!) is to wreck the curve!

I graduated from college with a degree in speech communications four years ago. I am now about to finish my first semester in nursing. I too had to go do the A&P and Micro. I really enjoy learning about things that interest me. As long as you love it, like you said you will do fine. You will study and learn because you enjoy what you are learning, not because you have to! thankfully I didn't have to have chemistry at the college level, i had it in high school. I am going back after 10 years.... I have a BA in English and am currently working as a programmer. I am taking Microbiology right now at night and next fall will start A & P 2 at night. I hope to start my BSN next May. I am doing MUCH better this time around as I actually KNOW what I want to do with my life, now. You will do great!!! It's easier, and now I am the nerd in class who does well... :rotfl:

Darn, y'all, we should form a new association. I'm in the same situation. 30 years old. Degree in European History. Working this whole time as a software engineer. I decided to pursue this nursing thing in february, so I'm in my first class in 9 years. I'm taking Biology 101 to qualify for A&P. I think I'll do A&P I and nutrition next quarter, then A&P II and statistics, then microbio and chemistry. We'll see. I'm nervous, but I'm feeling up to it. Let's stay in touch through this process.

Yay! I didnt know there so many of us "Computer People" who decided to jump ship and go into nursing school. I, too have a previous degree that is not related whatsoever in nursing. My degree is in Management of Information Science. I am currently working as an IT consultant but recently decided to pursue nursing.

Hello Everyone,

I am going back to school to become a nurse. My previous degree was in Public Relations. I work in PR for a nursing agency. I just finished up A&P II and it went well. I got an A in part I and a B in part II.

I never enjoyed science, but I agree with everyone else that this time around as an adult learner, I am more focused and more mature. As an adult, I am going into nursing because it is something I truly want to do versus being 17 in college and just picking something that seems interesting.

Good luck to everyone. I was told by someone that second degree/second-career people make some of the best nurses because they bring along life experiences and are able to apply them to nursing.

i take microbiology and a&p this summer, along with the 3 remaining biz class for my degree. busy busy busy!

You can do it. I was 39 and had never ever had any sciences or math at the college level when I started in school. I was strictly a banker/business woman for 20 years when I took my first class. I took a heck of a cut in pay to become a nurse. And I'm still not a touchy-feely kind of person, so don't let the psycho-social stuff in nursing scare you. There are places for us non-nursy-psychy people in nursing and we make good nurses too.

You're never too old. Heck, I'm 52 and just finished my last pre-req. If I apply now and IF I'm accepted I wouldn't start until spring '05. Graduate spring '07 and that makes me..... older than I want to think about. But, I'm ready to learn (I know it won't even really start until after nursing school!) and I hope I have a little to bring to the table.

And always remember - Old age and treachery will beat youth and brains any day!! HAH!

My MIL graduated from nursing school at the young age of 56 - and she wasn't even the oldest in her class!

You will have a LOT to offer!

I'm 42, working on another career as well. I hadn't been in school for 20 years. Just study your butt off, and you'll do fine. Of course, it's stressful and you have no life other than that. But that's Ok. I do feel I'm more disciplined now than I was in my twenties.

If you're overwhelmed at first, just keep at it. The key thing to remember, IMHO, is that a lot of the stuff you learn, even in the pre-req courses, comes in handy down the line. All of it ties together eventually, so work very hard from the beginning. It's worth it.

Also, it does get more manageable as you go along. Not that it's ever easy, but you learn how study more efficiently and things like that.

Of course, I say this as I'm about to die from exhaustion, but one more week and I finally get a break. Actually, some sleep would be nice. I'll probably sleep for a week.
