I'm a grandma who has my grandson on the weekends. I found out when I went to buy corificeats that because my car has side-curtain airbags, I was limited in my choice. I use a hard, one piece type that mounts pretty much permanently to my car. My grandson is almost 5 months old and it works very well - however, the thing is huge and very heavy!

I would suggest researching corificeats in Consumer Reports.

I would do the consumer report search too.......things change so fast, and recalls happen all the time, so that is probably where you would get the most up to date info

BTW, we aren't certified at my hospital and it against our policy to tell mom anything or even help put baby in corificeat!

Around here, the fire department and the police dept. have car seat safety workshops. I would try calling your local departments and see if they do it. Maybe they can give you some information.

there is a car seat messageboard at parentsplace.com:

i used to go there when my son was smaller and needed a new seat. they have several certified car seat techs and they give great advise!

Consumer reports withdrew the study that they had in their magazine a few months ago and I haven't read anything regarding if the research was repeated or not.

The one thing I remember about the report that they published, is Britax wasn't even close to tops in performance...which was hard to believe considering the price.

It's just hard to find unbiased rankings.

You bring up a very good point. My DD is now 12, but when I needed to purchase her first car seat, I read ranking and reviews from a number of different sources. The car seat that I purchased was consistently near the top of every list, and it was one of the most basic, inexpensive models available.

As a Child Safety Seat Tech. I can tell you that all seats are made to the same national standards. The difference between the $45.00 seat and the $300.00 seat are the "extra" bells and whistles the manufacture ads. We tell our parents the "BEST" seat is one that fits their child, their car and they will use correctly 100% of the time. In order to find this seat. Take your child in place them in the seat, see how easy the straps are to adjust, see if the store will let you take the demo model out and try it in your car. Some bases are too wide for some seats. After you have purchaced a seat find a certified tech to help with the first installation. A lot of hospitals, police depts, fire depts have certified techs. The #1 problem we see with seat installation is it not being in tight enough. I hope this information helps.
