Advice: I love children but how do I know if peds is for me?
I agree 100% I've been working with kids for 10 yrs and its very rarely the children that make ur job hard its always the parents....the either love u or hate you and its usually not personal but its so hard not to let it get to you...I've held a parents hand as she witnessed her child take his last breath...and i've had moms and dads say thank you for giving their babies medicine even though they puked it up bc their so nausea from chemo..but if also had a parent tell me I was pathetic bc I didn't get his 13yo daughters IV in on the first stick I've also been witness to horrific child abuse cases where I've wanted to jump across the nurses station and strangle a parent...but this is what sets us peds nurses apart from others and thats why we're special

Whats to Enjoy about Nursing?
Thanks...for the acknowledgement..I am exploring other options..I'm transferring out of oncology (peds) to Peds Icu and I eventually want to make a transfer to forensic nursing..I'm taking the course to be a SANE nurse..so I'm aware I need a change and I'm making it....I hope you will enjoy nursing as I truly have it is in my opinion a noble profession as someone said previously......I just wish people were more aware of how much of ourselves we give day in and day out...I don't want a medal or anything just a little more respect would be nice...anyway good luck and when those mean senior nurses give you crap or make u feel stupid and the will..just realize thats its probably not you they're mad at just the job getting to them...

Whats to Enjoy about Nursing?
Ok thanks for the advice for those who gave it..but i would just like tosay that I'm not here to disuade anyone from becoming a nurse I AM A NURSE that is a big part of who I am and I do Love it..but sometimes as i am sure ia all walks of life it gets a little hard to take people's abuse with a smile...I have the utmost respect for all nurses amd many, many md's some of my best friends are doc's and I also enjoy teaching new grads I'm actually a master preceptor and I didn't get that job by chance I earmed it.....anyway just think my earlier venting was misunderstood by some but..my lord a little sympathy or encouragement would be nice........

Whats to Enjoy about Nursing?
I've been a rn for 5 years and I used to love to go work, but lately I can not stand the lack of respect that rn's get from md's and pts/pts families...now don't take this wrong its not all md's or pts but the ones that do disrespect us and flat out treat us like crap have taken a huge toll on me.......I did not bust my butt in nursing school and I do not leave ny family for 12-14hrs a day so I can go to work and be treated like a servant or maid or in the md case an idiot thats less of a person bc i don't have md after my name........my biggest issue is that in the past year I haven't been able to hold it in and I have found myself in several confrontations with docs and families....any advice????????????

Advice: I love children but how do I know if peds is for me?
obviously liking kids is a requirement for being a peds nurse...however remember you must be witness to children going through some crazy stuff....whenever I tell people i work in peds they always say OH I could never watch those babies and children suffer.....and its trus ut can be heart wrenching at times but very special too.....don't let anyone tell you that the key is not to get attached to your patuents bc in peds especially in long term pts like hem onc its impossible not to fall in love with them and their families...the only wat to know it try it out...you'll know right away if its for you its an instant love or hate...if you don't like it right away you will not learn to like it...good luck

Any buretrol advice???
The way to avoid bubbles is to Fill the buretrol wih say 10-20cc of fluid while keeping the tubing clamped...(so don't open the clamp between the burette and the bad while your priming the line) then open your clamp on the tubing and prime the line...also to avoid bubbles turn the clamp on the line upside down while your running the fluid through to prime(this is for alaris sets...and if u do get a bubble put a 5cc syringe onto the port distal to the bubble...then pinch the tubing or bend it right below the port..open the clamp in the line and pull back on the syringe slowly and it will such the bubble out will re priming the line sounds tricky but swear to god works wonders and i do it atleast twice a shift...

I think people did use Karo syrup in "the old days" however Karo, Honey and Molasses should NEVER EVER be given to children under 1yr bc its been dirctly linked to causing infantile botulism...

4 month old with chronic constipation
My sons has constipation issues too I'm a peds nurse but this advice also comes from my pediatrician: Breast is best for some but didn't work for me 1st formula to try is goodstart 2nd soy 3rd allimentum or nutramigen (one is similac one is enfamil) lastly is neocate. unfortunatly as u go down the line they get more and more expensive but it helps....each one is predigested a little to alot in the order I gave you....also glycerin suppositories are safe to use up to several times a day.....1oz of prune juice mixed with 3oz of formula does well to but it can cause loose stolls so you have to use your judgment on how much is too much but You can do that 3-4 times a day...do not give rice ceral is constipates which any idiot knows therfore I would definately look into a new peiatricain if anything give oatmeal......I started my son on fruit and veggies at 4mon old and he's pooped everyday since.....and also the BRAT diet is for diahrrea NOT CONSTIPATION..... last resort take him to a GI specialist just to make sure but I would not do that until I've exhausted all ideas above.......good luck
