Can't pass HESI, but graduated

Nursing Students HESI

Updated:   Published

So I was not able to pass HESI by a few points. However, I technically graduated from my program. If I take NCLEX and pass, will the fact that my transcripts will say incomplete hurt me when I look for a job or decide to go for my RN?

Believe me when I tell you I am deep in the weeds of BON regulation. Just because Texas prohibits it does not mean the remainder of the states do. Just because NLN is against it, does not mean a whit to the other 49 Boards.

You saying Elsevier and HESI are not 'accredited' indicates you are not understanding this. Elsevier is a textbook publisher. Of course they are not accredited! They supply the tools, and the accrediting agencies evaluate the use of those tools by the schools to meet the accrediting standards. To make an analogy: You are saying that since Chevrolet is not 'approved' by the Department of Motor Vehicles, requiring a driving test of someone who drives a Chevy is not legal.

Again, schools can and do use high stakes exit exams- and until the accrediting agencies say 'no' or the BON in the relevant state says 'no' those tests must be passed in order to graduate. They are, in fact, the final exam. Schools get to make their own policies.

I did use the incorrect wording. Elsevier is not "approved" curriculum. For example, my school tried to said that a 900 HESI score is required to pass NUR2811C. However, to make that a requirement of the course it needs a lot more approval than just from Nursing School faculty. It require months if not years of submittals and proposals to change requirements and curriculum of a course. And then even when it does reach final approval by all appropriate parties at the school, one then has to submit final approval to the state dept. of education. I found the information for my school here. https://www.mdc.edu/cassc/documents_2017/CASSC-Orientation-11-07-2017.pdf

For example, I was in a debate like this with my former school. I challenged them. Their policies and procedures state that proctored standardized subject exams can only account for 15% of a students grade and WILL be reflected in the syllabus. Another fact, graduation requirements must be approved by the Board of Trustees (per Florida Statute). Another fact, ACEN requires all policy and procedures be followed. Another fact, all graduation requirements must be made known to the students. Another fact, the HESI curriculum needs to be evaluated according to the Textbook Affordability Act, and be part of "required" texts." Wait, another fact, Elsevier does not recommend using their own tool as a graduation requirement. In fact, according to their OWN numbers, a student scoring 700 should be well above the 80% mark. But obviously that isn't happening. I'm sorry, but HESI is BS and one can wipe themselves with it.

And I hate that response... "schools get to make their own policies." If that were true, I could say that all nurse graduates need to know the Vulcan hand symbol greeting. No, Nursing schools are regulated for a reason. And I'm a bit upset that SO many professionals are putting their trust in such a non reliable and untested exam.

She is absolutely correct! I completed Gurnick in 2017 but couldn't pass the HESI all 3 times, but since I completed and passed all modules. My papers we're still sent in and I we able to take the NCLEX and passed. But couldn't pass the HESI. So you can still take the NCLEX without having a diploma from the school. I'M A LICENSED LVN in CALIFORNIA. You just don't have a diploma from the school

You're 100% right. I didn't pass the HESI all 3 times. School still sent in my paperwork. I took the NCLEX passed and I'm state licensed.

This is the answer I am looking for. I am in the same page as you. I didn't pass my HESI 3 times. It was really hard for me at that time. But the school let me take the NCLEX. we have given an option by school either repeat the last term or challenge the NCLEX without the diploma. I took that route because I got pregnant. I recently took my exam on Friday January 31st. I got a good pop up at pearson vue and breeze let me pay the license application already. I know by heart I passed. I heard something that you will have only limited license if you did not have diploma from your school? I am just wondering if this true? and is there any problem looking for a job just bcuz you didnt graduate from your school or no diploma?

All public nursing school curriculum needs to be approved and accredited by the appropriate state dept of education, state board of nursing, andor whatever additional bodies they choose. Elsevier does not have any state board accreditation. In fact, the ONLY accreditation they have is from the AACN in Continuing Edication. In short, no, a public nursing school can not deny your graduation based on HESI. A lot of states even have laws or rules against nursing programs denying graduation due to a standardized test. Unfortunately, a lot of public nursing schools feel pressure to keep their NCLEX passing rates up and only do this test so that they don't look bad. If a public nursing school does this to ANYONE and you're school isn't listening, hire a civil attorney and make a formal complaint to the respective dept of education and board of nursing.

Hello, thanks for this info. I am battling with a Florida for profit school and ADN program who is threatening to hold my graduation because of not passing the HESI Exit exam. I passed all of my courses, my clinicals and labs. I'm talking with the school this week with my attorney. However, I don't live in Florida and I'm trying to find the law you speak of. Please advise and thank you. I need all the help I can get. Also, they want me to pay and retake a whole other semester.

What ended up happened for you? I haven’t been able to pass my exit HESI so I cannot sit for my boards in Illinois yet. I’ve passed the HESI for each class but not the exit for the program

What are the laws on private schools nursing schools with exit HESI’s and graduation in California? Where would I find that information at?
