Hi,

I was curious if there are still alot of Canadian RNs moving to the US to work? If so are you having any trouble finding a job?

I am in the process of getting my Visascreen and have yet to start looking for a job.

Thanks

Once you get your TN status underNAFTA and your visascreen you can get a SSN to work in the US so you don't have to worry about which state will give you a license.

Hi,

Thanks for the information. Do I have to get a job offer before I can get TN status?

Yes, at the border you have to present your letter of employment, visa screen and proof of your education to obtain your TN. Then you can get your license for whichever state and SSN. Good luck!

...I was an RN in Ontario and I moved to to the US about 5 years ago and I can tell you most hospitals I know are laying off hundreds of nurses each. If you are accepted into a position here in the US make sure they are no layoffs in the near future.

Guppy is right. I've been a nurse in the USA for 12 years and they do make cuts as well. Also the state hospital where I worked up till a last week (I'm moving TO ontario) is furloughing employees one day a week.

I don't think this is going to hit nurses but NYS is in desperate financial straits. You should just look to California with all it's cuts in services (cuts to teachers, educations, public services, parks, law enforcement, prisons etc)

Don't think this won't happen here in NYS. Hopefully not, but the cutting is already starting.

I was recruited back in 2004 to work in North Carolina. The VisaScreen was kind of a pain because the US Border Patrol made a mistake and gave me my TN without me having the VisaScreen complete. So, I was stuck in the US without legally being able to work until I took and passed the NCLEX almost a year later. It's a really, really long story about the drama that I don't want to get into here. I learned about the job in NC at a job fair downtown Toronto. There were several major US hospitals there - basically hiring on the spot. Some I remember were Vanderbilt, Mount Sinai, Duke, UNC...you get the picture. I brought a handfull of resumes and dropped them off everywhere. I was a new grad at the time. They offered me a full-time position in the emergency room. They reimbursed me for my VisaScreen, relocation, and gave me a $5000 sign-on bonus. I now have 5 years of critical care experience and certifications up the ying-yang...something I would have NEVER gotten had I stayed in Canada. That said, I sometimes feel like I owe it to Ontario to work there....like repayment for the wonderful education I received at York University. Perhaps I lucked out, but I have no regrets and will continue to thrive as long as the states will have me.
