I know this question has been talked about, but i was wondering about the recent situation. I am a nurse from canada and have to do my 6 week adaption period in an irish hospital. I was wondering if anyone knew my chances of actually getting a placement because of the recruitment freeze? I was thinking of going over there anyway with a working holiday visa and keep looking if i dont get any responses to my emailed resumes.Or if anyone has any tips on making the process easier that would be great.

Thanks:heartbeat

I have moved your thread to the international forum for a better response.

I think your going to find it very difficult to get either a placement or work afterwards because you are not a EU citizen and most EU countries recruit from Europe first.

Please do some reading on the International Forum as to what is going on there right now. Canadians are considered just the same as any other foreigner wishing to work there. Jobs are first going to go to those with passports from there and then from the EU. You would be third in line in terms of preference, so unless you have significant experience in an area where they have a shortage, it is not going to be possible to get a visa at this time to work there. That is also one of the reasons why you are going to find it hard to get the 6 week program completed as well.

You cannot get a working holiday visa in the first place either as an RN; as you said as well, they have a hiring freeze in place. This is also why you are having issues trying to find placement. Makes no sense for a facility to assist in training someone if they are going to be unable to hire them.

If you are not going to be able to get hired as an RN there, why are you wish to go thru the trouble to complete the adaptation program?

I relieze that it will be it will be hard, but i know its not impossible. My friend just got registered in the UK has a job and she only has 2 years nursing experience. Also, i dont understand why the nursing boards in EU are taking all these international nurses registration money if they don't plan on allowing them to get registered.

I have invested too much money and time to give up until i hear back from the hospitals and recruitment agencies. I am being realistic, but i also have some hope. I wish i could talk to someone that actually completed the adaption program to see how they did it

Well all I can say is I am surprised your friend got a job as it does state very clearly on the NHS job website that employers will not assist getting work permits unless experience is on the short occupation list and the employer can prove they was unable to fulfil the job with a citizen or EU citizen.

The NMC do actually state that they can not assist with work permits. The same could be said with US nursing boards why are they still processing foreign applicants when there is a retrogression ongoing but at the end of the day they are just after the money

I guess i wish there was consistency with the nursing boards. They approve some people, and other people dont have a chance.

Just because you get a license does not mean that you will get hired and get a visa to work there. Same thing as a foreign nurse that wishes to work in either Canada or the US. We have a retrogression in place and have had one for close to two years, and we are not seeing visas issued; but people are still paying money to get a license.

Your friend may have gotten a job, but that still does not mean that she will get a visa to live and work there and remain there. These visas are only temporary as well and can get cancelled at any time. There is no guarantee that one will be able to remain there for the length of the visa.

Remember that the facility needs to prove that they were unable to hire a citizen of that country first, since the NHS is undergoing lay-offs, it is going to be hard to prove that.

All I can say is best of luck to you. But you are hearing from three of us here as to what to expect. And two of them actually are from the UK.
