Canada to USA - Visa/Work Application Questions

Published

I'm a Canadian nurse (Toronto) looking to move to New York and work there permanently.

The requirements I know of are:
- pass NCLEX
- New York nursing license (NYSED)
- VisaScreen (from CGFNS)
- TN Visa (NAFTA work Visa)

Am I missing any other requirements?

After I get all the requirements, can I apply to hospital positions if I am from Canada? I get the sense that most people apply to travel agencies for short term contracts since they plan to return to Canada or their original country. However, I plan to stay in the US so do hospitals hire international nurses with TN visas?

Thank you!

Or do I need the H1B Visa?

Hello, any update? I actually attended a Marskell Group job fair in 2019 where half of recruiters where US based. I went to their website prior to the job fair and found a job post. I contacted a recruiter even before seeing them during the fair. The rest is history.

While waiting for my CGFNS Visa Screen certificate/US BON results, I became proactive of sending emails to other US State recruiters/HR if they hire Canadians based on TN permit. I got some responses.

I am a hospital direct hire. Just email hospitals in New York!

Hello thanks for responding!

No update yet. I am still waiting for my NY license to be approved. How long did it take for your CGFNS Visa Screen? And when did you apply for it? I will apply for it soon but I don't know if COVID will delay it or not.

CGFNS VS took at least 3 mos to complete due to 1 school late in sending the form in 2019. Visa Screen certificate is good for 5 years and 5 years for them to keep your info so why not start to apply now. You could pay e-save afterwards to prolong saving your info.

Okay I will look into it ?

What state are you in now?

Im currently in Maine, my first choice. I had Michigan license but did not renew since I didn't think of relocating there.

Hi again. How did you get the emails of the US recruiters or hospitals before meeting them?

*Marskell Group website (the one that did the job fair in Toronto in 2019) was online and they had some job posting on their website, the recruiter's info was also there. It looks like their website is down right now.

When you browse any hospital's job posting/contact & email them for questions then, you would then be redirected to their recruiter or HR department.

Thanks for the quick responses!! Really appreciate it.

For the CGFNS Visa Screen Certificate, did you pay for the regular option or the paid extra for the expedited version?

Nope. I just paid the regular fee.

* You only have the choice to expedite when they have all the required forms.

They offered me to expedite the review but then they released the certificate in few days, kind of waste of money if I paid for it.
