World Canada CA Programs

Published

hi,

i got accepted into the sept 2007 program. how many of you are nursing students or pre nursing students in langara? and those who graduated or are current students - any tips on the courses, professors, practicum, books, tuition etc.?

come out, come out, wherever u are! :D

Woah~ I just heard back from the Admission Clerk on Mon, and now I'm on the waitlist O___O That's really fast!

Wow~ Erik! So you're like 1/2 way through the program! I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions to ask once I hear back from Langara.

I wish I was 1/2 way through! Once I finish term 5 at the end of April I will have officially made the 1/2-way mark. This next term should be good - only have clinical 3 days a week. No classes if you complete BioMedical ethics before starting the program (which I reccomend, BTW). On Friday I was talking to a friend in term 6 who was taking BioMedical Ethics and he was saying it was hard to have all the nursing classes plus that too.

Term 4 is very hard, glad it's over. Now I have exams this week and I can relax (or find a job).

Now I'm just rambling!

Take care,

Erik

Hi Erik,

Wow, that's great you're at the 1/2 way mark. I am starting in September, and feeling excited and a bit nervous. Any suggestions to help out this nervous soon-to-be student nurse?

For example:

Would you recommend taking electives first (english, phil, etc.), and are we allowed?

Where are Langara's students generally placed for practicum?

Any additional reading to help/ aid first and second term courses?

Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks and congrats!

Hi Tingers,

I took all my electives before getting into the program. You can also take Biol 1190 and Biol 1191 (in sequence) before starting, although nursing students have priority in registering for those (I believe). I was told we couldn't take Biol 2290 or Biol 2291 before the term they were scheduled for (term 3 and 4). The topics in 2291 especially are synchronized with what you are learning in your nursing classes.

Clinical placements are throughout the lower mainland. I think they try not to send you to Whiterock if you live in North Van, but one term I had to go to New West and I live in Van. Bit of a commute for me that term.

There's nothing in particular I think you need to read ahead of time, unless you are a keener, but it's probably too far away from your intake to buy the textbooks. You never know when they might change the edition.

Take care,

Erik

Hi Erik,

Thank you for answering my questions. I am sure I will have more questions once I start the program. In the meantime, thanks again and good luck.

Ting

ill also be starting the nursing program at langara this fall 2010 semester. is it alright if i ask a few more questions?

for the skills lab, were you able to practice on simulation dolls?

how confident and prepared did you feel going to clinicals for the first time?

were the clinical placements fairly organized?

do you get to choose which hospital you want to go to for clinicals or were they assigned to you?

how much clinical experience did you have (in terms of days per week/hours in total) on sem 1? sem 2? sem 3?

also, you mentioned that sem 4 is hard. what was the most difficult aspect of that semester? was it a certain course?

okay thats all. i would have just PMed but i didnt know how to D:

thanks!

To be able to send a pm the site requires that you have 15 or more posts to your name. :)

1. You practice on the sim dolls if it's appropriate or necessary for the skill. Term one, not so much. BP, temp, etc. you practice with a partner or on family.

2. You start off very simple in clinicals. Everything you need to know they will teach you.

3. Don't know what you mean.

4. You list your choices in order of preference.

5. Clinicals are generally Tuesday and Wednesday 6:30 to 2 or thereabouts. Most placements vary slightly.

6. Term four is hard because there is a lot of work to do as well as patho.

Hi fellow Langara students and grads,

I'm going into term 8 in May 2010 - and my registration is tomorrow. I don't know what elective to choose - options are Disability and Culture.

Which one did you take? How did you find it? How were the instructors? I've been hearing not so nice things about the Culture course's instructor.

Please reply quick! Thnx. :)

You guys are so lucky to be able to start the program. I applied last sept, but I won't be able to start until 2013. It's just a long waitlist! How long did you guys stay on the waitlist?

Specializes in Acute Medicine.

I was on the waitlist for 2 years. I see from the web site that they aren't even accepting applications currently because of all the people who've already applied!
