Hi all - I have a friend who has failed the NCLEX a couple of times. I don't know the rules as far as what happens when you fail, since I was lucky enough to pass on my first try. Anyway, it's been several years since she graduated (BSN), and I think she is wasting her potential (not to mention her degree, plus the fact that she could really use the RN pay) - she would be a great RN - so smart, and great clinical skills. But she is still working as a tech, because for some reason, she just can't seem to pass that stupid test. She is afraid to take it again. I want to help her - does anyone know of any books or study methods I could help her with? She has taken review courses and they haven't done the trick for her. I don't have my practice NCLEX stuff anymore, but I would like to get her something and help her practice. Any ideas?? TIA!!!

If it has been "seveal years", she may very well need a refersher course for the content.
I used Suanders and Kaplan...but passed the first time.
I think that one can take the test 6 times....if my memory is correct.
Also, I think, if one fails NCLEX 6 times the Nursing School is obligated to offer the entire program (again), but for free.
Good luck to her.

I have to say that what really helped me to pass the NCLEX was the kaplan review. I owed it to kaplan, their system really works. If she can take the onsite kaplan review even better, meaning spending a couple of hours reviewing questions with a tutor. I recall paying about 400 dollars for the review but it was worth every .

BEST OF LUCK TO YOUR FRIEND
She is going to take kaplan, but she has taken courses before. I think that the course will help her refresh her knowledge, but her confidence is shaken. That's why she has waited so long to try again. I'm not sure if she has taken it 2 or 3 times so far. Once she failed the first time I think she was afraid to take it again, and waited too long. She took a course then, but still didn't pass. I can't recall whether she did any kind of course before she took it the third time (because I'm pretty sure it's been 3 times). I want to help her with something in addition to the course. She has spent a lot of money on tests and courses in the past, which is why I wanted to to something to help her. I thought that maybe I could get some kind of NCLEX review book and take some practice tests with her. I recall having a book that was fairly helpful to me...I think maybe Lippincott, but I'm not sure. Even if I still had it, I'm sure it's too old to use now. does anyone have any recommendations about any books or study methods that we could use?
I didn't realize that about the school being obligated to let her repeat the program. I have never heard that. But I guess most people don't have this much trouble passing.
Thank you for the replies!!! I really hope I can help her! :grad:

I borrowed all books that I can borrow from libraries in my area, finished all exercises, especially Kaplan and Saunders, I repeated them 3 times and 2 times on them, finally I passed at 75 problems about 2 hours at the first time.

I can't remember the type of book off the top of my head (it might have been a Saunders Review) but thank goodness I read it! Any book that gives detailed explanations on how to break down and analyze the question will be a huge help. It helps to slow down and prioritize your answers. For example, thinking of ABC's first, then Maslow's hierarchy....
I only looked at this book two or three days before my NCLEX and I owe my passing the exam to the way I looked at questions differently. Of course this won't help with general knowledge we must know, but it really helps with prioritization questions.

Much will depend on state and how many times they will allow them to resit the exam, some may require a course before they can sit it again usually after 3 fails. There are many threads discussing the various plans on the exam Kaplan, etc but I would suggest your friend thinks about Suzanne's plan and all information can be found in 2 stickies on the main NCLEX forum page

Your friend needs to bolster her confidence with diligent preparation. She needs to stop dwelling on failure and think positively. She is going to the testing site to pass not to fail again. And even if she does fail, no one there is going to yell at her or beat her up. Have her consider Suzanne's plan when she tries again. She can do this if she is persistent and changes her way of thinking. Good luck to her.
