Can i say yes to a job, then say no the next day?

Published

Hey guys, im a new grad as of may

Been looking for jobs for a month and a half, applied at all the major hospitals in the area, VA's, and LTC's.

Im wanting a hospital job, but that not happening at this time, however i had two interviews at different LTC's centers. Not my favorite place to work but ill take it for now.

The first place i applied just called me back this morning and offered me a job, which is great and all, and i said yes ill take it because its just tough to find a job.

Now the question i have is the other LTC interviewed at im guessin will call me back and offer me a position also, now i mean theres no guarantees they will, and that why i said yes to the first one. i like the 2nd place better, and its only half the drive of the other one.

Ive been scheduled for fingerprinting and physical next week, and orientation starts Wednesday. If i get this other job soon, can i call them back and say hey thanks for offering me the job, there is another one that works better for me? Will i get in trouble?

When I was a new grad, I got a job offer while I was waiting to hear from my preferred facility. I called the facility I was waiting on (they were going to call new grads who'd been hired in two weeks to let them know) and said, "I've gotten another offer. I was wondering if you could tell me my standing with you so that I may make a decision, because this other facility needs to know by Friday if I'm going to accept or not." They said, "Please don't take the other job. Give us a day to get back to you with our offer."

I see nothing wrong with calling the place you prefer and telling HR, "I've got another offer on the table. I'd prefer to work at your facility, but don't want to pass this up if I'm not being considered for a position with you any longer. Can you tell me either way?"

10 or 15 years ago, you would have gotten different answers. The climate has changed, and you can't go burning bridges anymore. Just be careful when this comes up in the future. Facilities that make offers now, are not making them lightly.

I agree with the above posters that if you weren't sure you should have told them you needed a little time to think about it, but whats done is done. If its truely the next day or even a couple of days I think you should be able to give them a call, let them know you that something has come up, and you can't fullfill your responsiblilites. If its been longer or if you have started the process (background checks, drug tests etc), or if they have given you a start date, and stopped trying to fill your position then you need to move forward with them as if you have the job. I would stay for at least a year, and by then you may love it. The grass isn't always greener, and the extra drive may be worth it. Of course if its truely crappy, and the extra drive is 200 miles then it may be worth the risk to move on.

If you do get the call before you have started any orientation or pre-employment, you can call and tell them "at this time I cannot except the position offered. Trust me, they have others they can call, and I don't think that should hurt your chances in the future, you never were an employee yet anyways.

With this kind of economy, it's really hard to turn down job offers. How about if you push through with the first one and ask for a PRN/pool position in the second one if they call you back?

"Dear Sir or Madame (or name if you know it),

I greatly appreciate the opportunity that you have offered me but I must regretfully retract my decision to accept it.

As I'm sure you can imagine, I have been applying at other locations during my job hunt. I acted a bit premature when I accepted your offer immediately as I knew that there was another strong possibility.

While I hold nothing against your facility, I have to make a choice that is best for both me and my next employer. Because of many factors which I cannot disclose at this time, I feel that I would be able to provide a better quality of work at this other location.

Please forgive me for making this abrupt change and I sincerely hope that this does not cause you any issues.

I wish you and your facility well and hope to cross paths again in the future.

Sincerely,

Me"
