Can Nursing Schools Require You to List Medication Use?

Can anyone tell me for certain if a school has the right to require it's potential students to list all of the medications that they are currently on? I am about to start an LVN to RN Upgrade program at a Community College and they are asking me to write sown all of the medications that I am currently taking. Also, they want me to state if I have any mental illnesses.

I contacted both the RN and LVN Board. They told me that I will need to hire my own lawyer.

I don't think we can give you any better information than your state BON has

My school did not require that, that is all I can say about it because I do not know about other schools.

We cannot offer legal advice as per the Terms of Service.

You have to list them when you get hired at a facility. I don't think they can ask them until you are given a contingent offer. The decision to admit you can't be based on medical problems. However they can remove a contingent offer if you don't meet the medial clearance to perform in the program.

There are varying laws from state to state about disclosure for those employed or involved with the public, minors and the elderly that allow these questions.

It would be best to contact a lawyer.

and to my chagrin, you don't have to tell them, they can go on line and find out anyway.

In Texas the Board of Nursing website has a list on mental illnesses that must be declared. Also, it is good to know now and not after passing the nclex if you can get a license. As far as meds, I think they need it for the clinical facilities requirements.

If they drug-test you, they will be sure to want to know if you have a prescription for whatever shows up in your urine or hair.

The only way to tell "for certain" is to ask an attorney in your state, because the answer may be peculiar to your state. Do so.

Oh, and if "barryantler" is really your name, you should seriously consider changing it on AN. You can edit that in your profile. if/when you go to nursing school you don't want to worry that a classmate or faculty member sees one of your posts (like, oh, one asking about whether the school can ask you about your drug use) and recognize you. If you change it, it changes all your past posts too.

Good luck.

Their school, their rules. You don't have to disclose but they don't have to admit you either.
