Can an LVN/LPN perform urodynamic testing?

Can LVNs perform Urodynamic tests? I was just offered a job in Texas performing urodynamic tests and I have searched and searched online to figure out if it is withing the LVN scope of practice and no luck. I have found several job postings through out the United States looking for LVNs to do these test, but I haven't been able to find anything specific as to wether an LVN can or can't perform these test. It is better safe than sorry I think.

I know that you can in Missouri. I did it for the last year and a half. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to in Texas.

dont quote me but... as I understand it a LVN/LPN can do anything the facility is willing to teach you to do and as long as the facility is willing to take on the responsibility should something go wrong.

I have heard of LVN's in other states pushing IV medications legally... This is something I would never do... but again... if the facility teaches and is willing to accept responsibility......

I would get a copy of the policy for urodynamic testing from that facility... it should state who can do that test..

BUT keep in mind.... just because you can do it in one facility doesn't mean you can do it in another facility.... AGAIN the Facility must be willing to teach and accept responsibility for that teaching.

nope. nursing scope of practice is regulated by the board of nursing which means the state tells you what you are allowed to do. the facility you work for can further restrict your practice from what your state allows but they (your facility) cannot expand your practice even if your facility is willing to "teach" you. please always check you npa.

i think he probably knows not to ask a urologist what the scope of practice for an lvn/lpn is. do you have some sources to share with us that specifically address that issue? other than the fact that one person here is doing the testing, ads are posted recruiting lvns, and traiing programs are pitched to lvns, i couldn't find anything either.

The only way to find out for sure is to check with the Texas Board of Nursing. They should have an e-mail or phone # you can call to check on such matters. Wishing you the best :)

i am in no way saying your wrong... but i do question why lvn's in one state can give iv meds when a lvn in another state cant. talking to a lvn who gave a med to a family member of mine when i was in arkansas, they informed me they had to take a class given by the facility before pushing the medications and then they were limited to what they could push...

personally, i don't do anything i wasn't thought in school for the most part.

In most states the NPA is so vague is drives me crazy! Your best bet is to ask your Board of Nursing via email (always best to have something in writing). Where I worked before the PA or RN did the testing, but I don't see why any LPN couldn't. Good luck! Also don't count on your facility to be correct in telling you what you can and cannot do. Their ONLY interest is theirs.
