Can I work two casual positions at once in Alberta?

Hi there!

I interviewed for two casual positions (as an NA & a unit clerk) with Alberta Health Services last week and I've been offered both... I accepted the one position the other day and was offered the other position on my dream unit today (the manager left a message).

What can I do?? I'm a second year nursing student so I'd love to work at both of these positions as I think they'd both provide me with amazing, but completely different, experience.

Does anyone know if I'm allowed to take both positions?? I will definitely tell the manager of the second unit that I have already accepted another job (and see if she's still interested in hiring me) but Im wondering if this is even possible. If it is, how does it work exactly?? And would you recommend I do this or would it be really tough to juggle the two jobs?

I'm completely new to the world of AHS - please help! Thank you!!

I don't see any reason why you couldn't work both. Many people that work casual have more than one job.I don't think the fact that you have accepted the other job should matter. Usually with casual they will call you when they have shifts that they can't fill.I would think that as a student having two casual jobs would be ideal.

Thank you for your input Loriangel14, I really appreciate it! Im crossing my fingers that the second unit doesnt mind that I have another casual position

and that I can take both jobs without upsetting anyone (managers, schedulers etc).

I did that last summer with AHS and there was no concern for me. I didn't bother telling my managers as I was only called in as needed. That's what made it beautiful working casual. One was for employed student nurse and the other as a nursing aide.

I figured since they never said there was a direct issue I never worried about it.

Best of luck!!

I wouldn't bother telling them if you're casual. It's not uncommon as a casual to have no shifts for a month or two. So having two casual jobs would be ideal for you.

Thank you for replying guys! It's so helpful to talk to ppl who are familiar with casual positions.

One thing I'm wondering is if both units can see all the shifts you have booked for each month (including shifts at on the other unit) on that online scheduler software? Or do you have different schedules for each unit? Sorry I dont have my login yet so Im not sure how that stuff works either.

There's something that's being overlooked here. Alberta Health Services is the ONLY employer and they have taken a hard line over people holding two positions. Individuals shall only hold one position with AHS, no matter what the FTE. Period. While it's true that there are lots of people who work a regular position and work casual somewhere else, it cannot be within a posted position, ie one with a position number attached to it. If I were you I'd call human resources and ask them the question.

That's interesting. I work for AHS, and we have an RN who works Casual on 2 units in the same facility.

That RN will have an informal agreement with the second unit that allows her to pick up shifts, but she cannot hold two "positions". AHS is really clear on that.

Or, she is employed by the staffing office in the casual float pool and has stated she will only work on x and y units.

I can work my unit and pick up extra shifts through the staffing office. I specify that I will only work on a certain unit. The payroll can be a female dog because you have to get a "casual" shift form and have it signed by the charge of the unit you float to, to enable that unit be billed for your hours.

Were you able to work two casual jobs with AHS without a problem. I am in the same predicament right now.
