Can I work 12 hour shifts consecutively?

I just recently got a new job as a nurse at a hospital that is 2 hours away from my home.  I don’t start orientation until Monday, however I was wondering can I request to work my 12 hour shifts all in a row. I’m planning on sleeping in a hotel or Airbnb during the three days I’m working so I’m really hoping for consecutive shifts, esp since I’ll be doing NOC.  Thank you so much for the help. I will ask on Monday, but I didn’t want to annoy them during the weekend.

Congrats on the new job. How do you plan on getting thru orientation? Your request is not unreasonable but that does not mean you will get it. It depends on the unit staffing patterns, computerized scheduling or self scheduling, seniority, etc, you would be more likely to get 3 in a row if you volunteered to work every weekend.

Good luck, hope it works out.

On orientation you may be constrained by the schedule of a preceptor or the education department. However, many people work their 12 hours shifts in blocks and it should be reasonable to do, either during or after orientation. Good luck.

I have worked my three days in a row for the past 4 yrs. I am "Weekends Only plus One". So, I work my Sat/Sun and choose Monday as my third day.
