Can I use my own laptop for a proctored test?

Published

I'm trying to pin-down a prereq class to take this fall. I'm a little nervous about the proctoring. I live in small town rural Missouri, so there aren't a lot of options.

I have mobile wireless internet that I use on my laptop. Can I just take my whole computer to the library and have the librarian proctor my test? There are a couple of library computers there, but I really don't wish to sit there while people come in and out. Plus, the librarian is very chatty.

If I use my own laptop and internet connection, I'm sure I can seclude myself in the backroom for the duration of the test.

Also, how well do the schools check out the proctors? I really don't want to put anyone out with the whole proctoring thing. I don't like to be a pest. I have a relative who is a teacher. I was wondering whether I could just hole-up in her classroom and take the test. I know relatives aren't really allowed, but cheating isn't my thing.

Thanks!!

What test are you taking? Is it through a college? CLEP? If you are taking CLEP or EC exams you will have to go to a testing center. CLEP's are given at many community colleges and EC exams are given through Pearson Vue testing centers. I highly doubt you will be able to you use your own laptop to take a proctored exam.

At the school I teach at (non-nursing classes), you must go to a proctored location and use their computer. You may say cheating isn't your thing, but there is no way for the school to know that. You could easily have notes on your laptop that you could look at. Also, you can't hide in a back room because the proctor needs to be able to keep an eye on you and your computer screen.

Most places email the place you want to use and give them specific guidelines they must follow to proctor your exam. What is allowed and what isn't allowed. Don't worry about "putting someone out". If they don't want to be your proctor, they can say no.

When we take proctored exams at my school we all go in the computer lab, use those comp's with the teacher eyeballing us the whole time. I'm not taking online courses though, these exams are for ATI which my school uses so we test differently for those and they are considered proctored exams. But that's the only experience I have with that.

The requirements for using your own computer are given on UNE's website for their courses. This is a new process for them. Students still have the option of arranging proctored exams at libraries, testing centers, colleges, etc. It depends upon the course you are taking. You have to read the testing directions that are usually given in the course information on the school website. Each school will have its own policies.
