I have been going through some really stressful times - family wise. I was at work and I just felt lousy and dehydrated, so I gave myself a saline iv. I got caught, got fired and now they say they are going to report me to nc bon for practicing medicine without a license?????
Yes, I am personally aware of 3 individuals who have had licenses suspended and/or revoked.Read your state BON newsletter/website: disciplinary actions of a licensing board are public record. Though the notation may not list the specifics of an individual's actions, it will indicate the legal grounds on which the discipline was levied.
I don't get any sort of newsletter from the BoN, but I'll take a look at the website. I think the thing that interests me most WON'T be there, as in it will only list those against whom an action was taken....not those who had nothing held against them.
I'm sure that individual States will have differing views on how to handle the same situation; I'm guessing my own isn't as stringent as I'd like.
I'm sorry OP that you posted this thinking you would get anything other than pure unadulterated judgment instead of a real response to your answer. People will much sooner tell you what they think about you before ever addressing your situation.
I'm not sure what to think about this. And I don't have much advice to give you, especially since this has already reached the resolution of you being reported and fired. All I can say is good luck and possibly consult an attorney. The BON will tell you what they think of your actions, no one else here can do much for you besides speculate (and judge you whilst kicking a dead horse)
Best of luck to you and if you make out with your license try not to make the same mistake again

This is very nice but COME ON! Try not to make the same mistake...IV yourself at work... again?
I barely have time to pee at work.
Saying anything beyond that is a waste. We all have suspicions of what happened or what "really" happened.
We all know that people that start IVs on themselves are more often than not hungover to hell. And I really can't fathom someone on shift walking around uwith a line on them.
But what I won't do is:
Create a speculative story
Accuse the OP of that story without proof
And then start chastising the op based on a story I literally made up in my head.
In my mind, that's akin to what a paranoid crazy girlfriend does haha. So, I'll bite my tongue and just respond to what the op asked instead of asserting my unwanted and unneeded 2 cents.
It was a stupid thing to do. Should you be fired? I'd fire you if you worked for me. Should you lose your license? Nah, maybe some kind of probation period or slap on the wrist. I would truly seek legal advice just to see what you could be up against.
Here is my personal opinion. Everyone makes mistakes and has had a huge lapse of judgement at various points in their life. This was one of yours! Learn from it, do what you can to protect yourself, let this make you a better nurse in the end.
I wish you luck. Don't let this get you down. Doing something stupid doesn't make you a bad nurse, it makes you human.
ps. Just drink water next time.

Based on what I'm reading.....she's probably a Nurse Manager now.
