Hi all,
I have posted a few times about my worries on getting into a nursing program and just wanted to share that I got accepted to Watts School of Nursing in Durham. I am so excited and I was wondering if any Watts students (or from other programs) had any advice on how they have gone about financing their education. I never had to deal with financial aid when I got my undergrad a few years ago and Watts is pretty pricey, (about $30,000). I plan to do the tuition reimbursement program with Duke when I graduate but I'm worried about what to do right now. Any advice on financial aid or private loan experiences would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!!:heartbeat
Hi All,
Of the few schools I am applying to Watts is high on my list. I plan on attending the next information session in June but I was wondering if anyone could answer a few questions for me in the mean time.
How does the process work for the pre-req semester? I already have my Bachelors along with the majority (if not all) of pre-reqs and would likely need to take many MOC filler courses to obtain the 18 credit hours required. Would the 18 hours be completed during that one semester? Also, once you are accepted to start the MOC section, you're in right? Meaning you then don't have to apply to start the Watts section, correct?
Thanks for all of your help!

Hey unc,
I think the test and essay are important. My grades were not the best and my degree from the early 90's. I have been working as a cna for over a year to gain experience, had good references and a great essay. I think I got 85th% on part of the test and 80 percentile on the reading part so middle of the road for sure. I start in january with the nursing and I am excited to get going. good luck. Jennifer hawkins is the contact person at watts. She was really great to deal with. T

Hey,
When you are accepted it is for everything, both the pre-reqs and the nursing program. It's been awhile and things change but from what I remember there are 25 credit hours of required pre-reqs (that is A&P, math, english, religion ect) I had none of these completed before I started so I had to complete all 25 credit hours and it was done in one semester. Now you already have a Bachelors so you would probably have a lot of those requirements done. The school would look at your transcripts and tell you what you still needed to complete.
Now about those 18 credit hours. Since you already have a Bachelors you may have many of the required pre-reqs done. No matter how many of the required classes you have completed you still have to complete 18 credit hours with MOC (required classes or otherwise) so you can receive the Associates Degree in Health Science with the Nursing Diploma.
As for the the where when how... The required classes are night classes and are scheduled to be completed in one semester (6 months). The required classes are organized as night classes and are held at Watts. Now I had to take all 25 credit hours so all of my classes were at the school. I do know several who only had to take a few of the required and had to take alternate credits with MOC to complete the 18 required. From what I remember hearing these are usually done at MOC's RTP campus and are generally done within the same semester. That is what I have heard but can't speak from experience as I did not go that rout.
Ok and for acceptance. You apply to Watts (but also fill out a short application for MOC.) If and when you are accepted to Watts that also means you are accepted to Mount Olive College. So once you finish the pre-req requirements you matriculate into the nursing program (as long as you are in good financial standing with MOC)
Hope that helps.
Hey guys, I just moved to NC from MA and heard about Watts from a friend. I had been planning on finishing my pre reqs at a local community college and applying to a BSN program, but now I think Watts might be the way to go. I'd like to take the entrance exam on Oct. 13 so I have a chance to start classes in Jan. If I don't do too well can I just retake the exam later and the first score will be forgotten? Or will they average the two scores?
Hey Everyone!
I kind of stumbled upon this, and am desperately hoping someone can give me some advice! Im a senior at Appalachian State, graduating in the May with a degree in Psych and a Minor in Biology. I really would love to attend Watts, but am so afraid I will not get accepted! Any advice as to what to do to get in? Anything at all would help!
Thanks :)

Hey, as a student here I can tell you it is a great school.
However, I myself already had a bachelor's degree as well. Look into UNC or Duke before Watts. If you have a bachelor's degree, you could jump ahead and get a BSN while getting your RN from these schools. It's a better option than just getting your nursing degree by itself.
I looked into them but my GPA isnt exactly stellar. I have taken some really challenging classes that have placed me just at 3.0 gpa. So a lot of BSN programs are looking for something a lot higher. Can I ask you what you did to get into Watts? Ive talked to a few people and am quite concerned. I will have another degree, so I hope that will speak for itself!
Any recommendations though?

Thanks so much for the reply! Most daycares don't allow drop off before 7:00. I have only found two that allow 6:30 but they are too far away. Hopefully my husband's travel schedule will keep him home on the days I have clinicals at 7:00 or earlier, but if not I guess I will figure something out. Again, thanks for the info!
