Calling any Watts School of Nursing Students!!!

Published

Hi all,

I have posted a few times about my worries on getting into a nursing program and just wanted to share that I got accepted to Watts School of Nursing in Durham. I am so excited and I was wondering if any Watts students (or from other programs) had any advice on how they have gone about financing their education. I never had to deal with financial aid when I got my undergrad a few years ago and Watts is pretty pricey, (about $30,000). I plan to do the tuition reimbursement program with Duke when I graduate but I'm worried about what to do right now. Any advice on financial aid or private loan experiences would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!!:heartbeat

Hey, I was so excited about the Watts school of nursing...I am a California native and will be relocating to N. carolina if I get in. Just realized though that Im not a resident and know that my tuition will be extremely higher then a resident. Does anyone know how much more? I called MOC and no one could give me a answer. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

You tuition for Watts and for MOC will not differ from residents, they are both private programs and not state schools so you won't pay more than NC natives.

Hey everybody!

I just became aware of Watts not too long ago and Im interested in attending. Ill have a BS in health studies in my and I would like to begin my nursing education immediately after. Ive been looking at Accelerated BSN programs but I dont think the fast pace would work for me since I have 2 kids. I called the school but got no answer, maybe I called too late (?) I was wondering if anyone knew when the next admissions test would be? Also could someone tell me about the admissions process...is it that if you pass your exam and get everything submitted then youre in? Im a little unclear of how they choose to admit or if there even is an selective admissions process. Im from MI and there arent any diploma hospital based programs here, so this whole thing is new to me. Any help/info would be appreciated...Thanks!

Honestly, if I had a BS, I'd probably look into the ABSN programs at UNC-CH or Duke rather than Watts. You might as well take advantage of the education you've already gotten.

The next testing date is this Tuesday the 10th

After that there should be some dates in the first week or two of December.

Call between 8-5 M-F and you should get someone.

Search this thread or another Watts thread in this forum, we've outlined the process a couple of times.

But basically, you register for the test, take/pass the test, then submit an app with a fee + essay. Upon approval of that you have to submit a background check for acceptance. Then you do the enrollment stuff.

Lovee T,

Have been reading the "watts posts" lately as I am one who just took the entrance exams at Watts. I didn't pass the 2nd part of the test (and feeling super discouraged) however I am trying to get a test date for the retake and that seems to be difficult to get a opening. Any advice on retaking the reading test. I think I read the first passage and answered 12 questions. I am trying to be a become a super speed reader overnight I guess and still retain. Any reccomendations would be greatly appreciated. I am 33 and also a mother of a 4 year old. It was quite dissappointing to study for 2 months for the test and not pass. I am not giving up and really enjoyed or maybe felt some inspiration by your posts, thanks. And hey good luck! Sincerely, K

Don't read the passages, there is no way you can! Skim the passage for the answer to the question. In fact I would find it hard to believe you could answer all of the questions on the reading section period. I didn't and still did well.

hello, i am starting the moc stuff in june 10. I need to figure out the financing too. I work for duke now so they will pay me back when I'm done over 3 years. I need to get a loan I guess. unsecured not based on need.

Hello,

I just wanted to say "Hi" and introduce myself. I'm Jennifer and plan on attending the Watts information session tonight. I am currently a pet sitter and with business being slow and wanting to finish school, I have decided to go into nursing! I grew up in Durham (recently moved to Efland) and have always heard about the great reputation of Watts. I have attended Durham Tech in the past and am also considering their nursing program if Watts doesn't financially work out. That's the only thing that is scaring me about Watts is the price. Just hope I can get enough financial aid upfront  (can't do private loans). Though, I'm happy they have the tuition reimbursement program.

I'm so happy I found this site as I have learned so much. I am really excited to embark on this new journey!

I also wanted to add that Durham really is great. It's not as scary and crime ridden as some outsiders like to make it. Yes, some areas have their issues, but most of Durham really is a great and safe place. I hope this helps others looking into the program and other schools in the area. I'm hoping to move back to Durham after I land an RN job and live in my dream neighborhood of Watts-Hillandale :D

Hello

I work at durham regional as a cna right now and can't wait to be done with that. I love to help my patients but we are so understaffed that you end up running yourself into the ground. I have learned alot though in the year I have been working as a cna.

Can't wait to get going! congrats everyone who starts watts in 2011!

I work for duke too. I hope we have an advantage over the other grads b/c we work here. I think that they don't just hire all the watts grads anymore.

I am going to have to do partial loans and pay some monthly too.Credit is good but my wife makes good money too. Good thing my truck is paid off next january! See you there! Todd

Hi everyone! Does anyone know if Watts will accept older students. I am 53 and would like to find a nursing program. Any advice?
