Calling in sick

Nurses Stress 101

Published

So I have never called in sick to any job before but today I feel like crap. I'm supposed to work tonight and feel like I should call in but I'd feel guilty because I know that we are short staffed already and census at the hospital is full. I'm sick with a sore throat and mild cough, no fever. I've worked the last 2 nights not feeling well but I feel worse today. But I could probably still function if i had to go to work. What would you do??

Sounds like you tried to work through it. Sometimes a day of rest is needed.

if you are truly sick, you are sick.

If you're sick you're sick. Give your body a break if it is needed. The hospital will just have to find someone to replace you. Just ensure you do it ASAP so you give enough notice. Feel better.

I'd call off. My patients don't need my cold or flu on top of whatever ailment they already have. Plus, if I run myself down, then I'll be out for 2 or 3 shifts, instead of just one.

PS do NOT feel guilty! It's your employer's job to make sure there are enough staff to cover these very predictable events. THEY should feel guilty if there are not enough people, NOT YOU.

When you are sick the best thing to do is take care of yourself early so that it doesn't snowball into something worse. You will also be protecting your patients and coworkers. Working night shift automatically lowers your immunity. Do not feel guilty. You are sick and should take care of yourself!

I worked my last shift with a temp of 38 degrees celcius. I ended up leaving early and got admitted to hospital with raging cellulitis

I made a monumental medication error and gave the wrong medications to the wrong person

I'll be calling in sick if that ever happens again. I feel so unbelievably guilty that put someone in jeopardy because I was addled with temperature.
