California's 2009 New Grad RN Program- Who's hiring right now?

U.S.A. California

Published

Greetings.

This is my story- I graduated from Nursing School in May 2008 (ADN) and passed my boards in October 2008.

I live north of San Fran and have yet to find a New Grad Program. I've been on Allnurses since last summer when I started studying to pass the boards. I used Allnurses especially the "random facts" thread which helped me pass the boards with flying colors. My family is ready to move out of the area because there is no new grad program avail out here.

I have spent hours online looking for New Grad positions in Washington State, Southern Ca, New Mexico, and Ashville NC. These are the areas, along with the Bay Area that I am interested in. I am looking to see if someone would like to buddy up or we can all help continue this thread and we can help search together for all the possible positions in the areas mentioned above or just in California. I have found that the work done alone is not enough or that I have just missed an application date, or I didn't know that blank blank just hired for the season.

The random facts thread was so hot because it was encompassing info about one main event with up to the minute info. Maybe a thread like "California's 2009 New Grad RN Program- Who's hiring right now?"- and it would include SNF's and whatever we can think of that a new nurse can do in the community, would be like the "random facts" thread. I'm sure I will hear from an Allnurses thread monitor about if this is OK or not.

At this point I am just trying to be creative and use the best resource online, which to me has been this sight.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Starzburst,

You said you got grilled on your clinical experiences... what did that entail? Did they ask you about your experiences, or specific scenarios and what you would do? Any help would be appreciated, I like to be prepared if possible.

Thanks so much

I agree, that would be very helpful

Hello,

Noticed you have 20 + experience as a nurse. Do you by chance have information of where I can apply at? I have been working as a RN in northern CA since August 17th, in the middle of no where. I want to move to central or southern CA. Do you have any advice on what I can do? please...

If you look above the 20+ years experience you will see that it says UK now in Canada. I am sorry but I have no idea on where jobs are in CA but I would say contact hospitals in the areas you plan on moving and see what they have to offer. It may be not quiet what you would like but getting your foot through the door is a start.

where exactly is in the "middle of nowhere"? i'm thinking of going out into far off places too. it's so difficult to find a job within a 100 mile radius of sf. ugh

Bummer!! i actually wouldnt mind moving near Oregon

anybody know where i can get a list of snf in California. im starting to give up on hospitals

I just ran across this thread and I will be graduating in December '09. I am curious of those who have posted, starting in May, how many have found jobs or new grad programs.

Good luck to everyone. Where there is a will, there is a way!

I am been spending at least four hours a day searching and calling employers. There is barely anything out there for new grads. No one wants new grads; it is so sad. The economy is killing all our chances of getting a job. Two years ago the new grads were having no problems. We graduated at one of the worst times. I spoke to the nursing recruiter from UCSD and he told me to not expect too much for at least another year. The major hospitals are getting flooded with applicants and can only take a hand full. Take what you can get. I have lost all hope in getting what I really want. My goal now is to get a job anywhere to get experience and volunteer to get my name known. It is all I can do. :(

Sorry for the bummer post.

"Where there is a will, there is a way" I totally agree!!!!

If I can give you one piece of advice. Be VERY PERSISTENT in your preceptorship. I was very shy about asking for job opportunities during my preceptorship and i totally regret it. Two people got hired on the same floor where i did my preceptorship. Most of all because they worked for that Hospital before. but dont rely on your nurse to tell you about job opportunites because i did and it didnt get me anywhere. Network like CRAZY!! Good Luck to you!!

A lot of places are opening their new grad programs after the new year, so things seem to be promising. But, there will be a lot more competition as the December grads will be in force then too.

I would treat your preceptorship as a really long job interview. I wish I had done that and networked with the manager so I could've gotten the job that I wanted and she would've seen my abilities as a nurse instead of me trying to tell her (not a good idea when I'm nervous!)
