California's 2009 New Grad RN Program- Who's hiring right now?

U.S.A. California

Published

Greetings.

This is my story- I graduated from Nursing School in May 2008 (ADN) and passed my boards in October 2008.

I live north of San Fran and have yet to find a New Grad Program. I've been on Allnurses since last summer when I started studying to pass the boards. I used Allnurses especially the "random facts" thread which helped me pass the boards with flying colors. My family is ready to move out of the area because there is no new grad program avail out here.

I have spent hours online looking for New Grad positions in Washington State, Southern Ca, New Mexico, and Ashville NC. These are the areas, along with the Bay Area that I am interested in. I am looking to see if someone would like to buddy up or we can all help continue this thread and we can help search together for all the possible positions in the areas mentioned above or just in California. I have found that the work done alone is not enough or that I have just missed an application date, or I didn't know that blank blank just hired for the season.

The random facts thread was so hot because it was encompassing info about one main event with up to the minute info. Maybe a thread like "California's 2009 New Grad RN Program- Who's hiring right now?"- and it would include SNF's and whatever we can think of that a new nurse can do in the community, would be like the "random facts" thread. I'm sure I will hear from an Allnurses thread monitor about if this is OK or not.

At this point I am just trying to be creative and use the best resource online, which to me has been this sight.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Thank you. I know its just a matter of time before we are all swamped with work. Its just hard to EVER get started if no one gives us that 1 year of experience. Unfortunately, i dont have any relative or friends who works at these hospitals. Any new grads who got hired?

I'm floating as well awaitng to get into someones ship! I'm applying outside California now and endorsing my license in case I do get a job. I have four kids to feed a depressed husband who lost his job and with it his role as a professional. I'm applying everwhere I can throughout the day everyday. Some positions are only open for a few hours and then they close all of a sudden. Keep your eyes open! Though since I graduated from outside of CA, I have been thrown to the back of the list according to some recruiters I spoke to. :( Hospitals are giving priority to students who had their clinicals at such hospitals, then to local BSN grads, next are the out of State BSN grads, and at the end of the line are the out of the State ADN new grads and returns. I'm in for a long line....:(

I'm keeping my faith up and hoping I nail a job in California. Congrats to all the newly activated RNs!

Have you applied locally? Why not stay where you graduated? CA is one of the worst places in the country to apply as a new grad right now, not trying to be a downer, just being honest. We have local BSNs with multiple degrees who haven't gotten jobs for nearly a year.

I moved to Utah about a year and a half ago; I completed school as a transfer student. I was lucky to have a local college accept me from Iowa. There are no jobs here, 127 applications went in for 15 new grad positions the hospital took (the only 1 hospital here)! I was one of the applicants. I may have made a wrong decision, but I turned their interview down inclining in my strong desire to move to California. I think about it, but surprisingly, I'm not bombed by this decisions, as I don't want to live here. There is nothing, absolutely nothing here...super lonely.

I was born in California and my entire family lives there, it would be great to live around my parents and help them out as they get older. Thats my focus, helping my parents :(. I was raised in Texas and thats another State I would not mind going back to. Hopefully, I can take my parents with me.

Is it me or is this looking like a really difficult situation?

From what I've heard Texas is one of the easier places right now for new grads. 127 apps for 15 spots actually sounds pretty good from what I've been seeing. I've heard 200 apps for 2 spots. 96 interviewed for 8 spots and I'm sure a whole lot more applied than those 96. One place I applied to had over 500 applications. These numbers are directly from recruiters and places I've applied/interviewed at, not just hearsay. The smartest thing right now (IMHO) would be to get a job anywhere you can and just get that experience under your belt. Once you have that you can apply to where you really wanna live. An ASN with 1 year exp will get the job before any BSN new grad generally. Also, if you already have a CA license, look in more rural areas, those will have lower app counts. Good luck, it's tough out there.

I searched TX hospitals, most new grads program closed already. Do they really consider out of state applicants? I called several hospitals in Navada, they said that they only consider local students... Any suggestions? Thanks!!

Many new grad positions slowing down now and getting ready for the September-August hiring (I hope). Look into travel nursing? Long term care..I know it not be your dream job..but after a year of experience, hospitals will hire you. Anyways, correctional departments only hiring for mental health...and that scares me ..u know? mental health/crime is a bad mix heading for tragedy and I want to come home! ")

Anyways, keep an eye open for opportunities in your near your long term care facilities perhaps? Just a thought considering the situation. Otherwise, await an opportunity to open and turn in your application ASAP!

Good Luck!

Thank you emmanewgrad, I am open to ANY position right now. Psych is not my favorate neither, haha...Thanks for your advice. I will keep searching!!

Scripps San Diego posted a surgical acute RN position. It didn't say it was a training program, but it didn't state experience required. The link for the listing is below:

Anyone heard anything, good or bad, back from last week's interviews? I think someone said they were going to have 2nd interviews, but the people I interviewed with never mentioned that. Anyone know if that was that definite?

Hey guys.....I just got some job postings for agency nurses needed in California for "perm. assignments" and "temp assignments". The agency is

tailoredhealthcarestaffing.com if anyone can use it. Experience was not listed as a requirment for employment and might help u get your foot or both feet in the door somewhere in CA. Like I said in another post: California hospitals and facilities are recruiting RN's here in MO???? Don't know why but our papers have offers from there a lot and if I see any I'll let u know. I hate to see Bro's and Sisters in the profession struggling----Crystal

Good luck....from Missouri again.

I haven't heard anything yet, but I was told by the lady running the interview event that we would hear by the end of this week. She said that for the most part, people are called back for a second interview because on the day of our interviews, we only talked to 1 person from 1 unit, but that if we weren't a fit for that unit, we might interview with another manager. From what I gathered from what she said, it sounds like some people will get a call with a "yes", some a call with a "no", and some a call for another interview. Good luck to everyone!
