California's 2011 New Grad Program

Published

When I saw that Torrence Memorial had closed their applications to their New Grad program starting in March 2011 I realized we needed a new grad 2011 thread! The 2010 thread was a great place to ask questions and get answers about upcoming new grad opportunities. So let's make this thread the same. :)

First off, When did you graduate?

Any old new grads out there? How long have you been looking for a job?

Wow! Congrats on graduating and passing the NCLEX! Thank you for your thorough response. What an inspiration!

I'm planning to apply to as many BSN schools as possible, I don't have the means to relocate so I'm stuck with only applying to 3-4.

I'm gonna definitely make as many connections as possible when I'm in nursing school. Were you allowed to do externships as a student or after you graduated?

At CSUSM the externships were done as a student and part of the last year of nursing school. They are done after you have completed your clinicals and your internships in school. They were not mandatory but if you wanted one you had to apply for it and go through and interview. These were also paid positions, not much, but something. You were required to complete a certain number of hours during the semester. I applied for two in a row so I had almost a year of extra experience before I graduated.

Oh how fun. Did you learn of them by the school or just worked during school breaks? My top choice school is CSULB and I will see if I am able to do that. Well I need to get accepted first lol

The externships were actually part of the program if you wanted to take advantage of them. You had to pay for the units but you got back about 20$ for each hour you worked. I believe all BSN programs have externships available after the clinicals and internships are completed but only in the last year of study.

For those interested, Palomar just posted ( Aug. 10) a new grad position in oncology. Hope that helps someone. I started my orientation at UCSD this week...Yeah!

persistancepays...I have to say I love your screen name, especially after reading about the 30 interviews. Congrats on landing the job at UCSD. I graduated in May 2011 and feel like I am getting better with each interview (just had the 4th one and going to the 5th one next week). I got more coaching for the last interview so we'll see what happens. I hope it doesn't take me 30 though.

@ persistance pays - I don't see the new grad position on their webpage. Do you happen to have the link for the new grad position? Thanks!

I saw it yesterday on Indeed.com. It had been posted on the 10th originally but you're right I don't see it there now. That's typical for Palomar, they never leave their positions on for more than a few days. I would call HRD anyway on Monday just to inquire about it. Sorry

Haven't heard of any yet but keep watching UCSD. I noticed yesterday they just added two more openings for new grads in med/surg oncology. Last time they did the same thing and posted them in stages. Good luck.
