Hi all

I'm soon to be working in the Berkeley area of San fransisco (hopefully within the next 5 months if all goes well). Im English in the UK at the minute, and although my husband is American, he is from Seattle so is as in the dark as I am:rolleyes: .

What I'm wondering is whats it like there? Is it true that its an expensive place to live? We are hoping to actually live in Alameda. What can we expect to pay for a decent 1 or 2 bedroom apartment there and whats the travel time like?

Anything else you might think would be useful to me would greatly appreciated.

I live on the other side of the bay closer to San Jose. it is expensive here. I would go on craigslist.org to see prices of apartments in the area, you can go to the San Francisco area, then go to the East Bay, and then go to Alameda if that's where you would like to live. I personally have not been over to Alameda but have heard conflicting things about the area. I believe it is slightly less expensive, but not as clean, but, like I said, I have not BEEN there so I don't know if that's true. the area is beautiful, you can drive to the ocean or the mountains. the people are nice and Berkeley is a cool little town. we moved here from Cambridge, MA and think Berkeley is comparable to that area...except for the weather! good luck!

Hi jesa,

thanks for that. Alemeda is only an option because someone recomended the area to us, neither of us have actually been. If anyone can suggest a better/cheaper/cleaner area that would be great.

I will be working at Alta Bates so anywhere with a short commute time would be fine with me.

Thanks again x

Hi...I live in the area, Oakland, Calfornia..Alameda is just a 10 minute drive from where I live..Alameda is a nice place to live, safe, and has a beach near by..

Anyone know the commute time from Alameda to Berkeley? Can I use BART? SHOULD I use BART or would I be better with a car? Ive heard there is no parking at the Alta Bates campus is that right and if so is there anywhere I can leave the car around that area? Also whats the chance of us finding an affordable place to live around Berkeley if we decide against Alameda?

Thanks!!
