LA County Nursing Applicants for Spring 2017-Generic Option

U.S.A. California

Published

Hello. Well I see that no one has posted anything for Spring 2017 applicants and I know that I'm feeling a little nervous here so I'd like to know if there's anyone out there on the same boat that I am.

Hi everybody, I'm currently a semester two student at LAC. Feel free to post on here or PM me if you have any questions. I was on the boards last year just like you guys and I would love to help in anyway I can.

Hi ... Nataliekorn,

I am so glad that can hear from you. I am a mom of 3 yrs old and 4 months baby. My question is, would it be too hard for me to maintain good performance, at lease passing grade; I am not an A student, but most of my pre-reqs grades are above average (I am a full time student).

The other thing that I concern is the clinical side as Supakimchee mention, that LAC most likely to picks student clinical side rather than student choose it; although, it says students can choose clinical side.

I live at Alhambra so hopefully If I got In LAC I would be able to choose clinical side close by campus, otherwise I have to think of another alternative colleges. I am not confident to be accepted in this program, but I am just a person who always thought the future and like to organize things earlier because I am a mom of 2 children and my times and schedules are not flexible.

I also applied to Rio Hondo, so far I have not hear from them yet. If I got in Rio Hondo, it takes 30 minutes commute; however, I will qualify for government waiver and plus Rio Hondo offers Child Care. I am just so into LAC because it is close to my home and offers good clinical also chance to work with USC, since I know many new grads struggling to find first job.

Please advice. Thank you in advance

mery_ay, I don't know if you would be able to have a good performance. Nursing school takes a lot of work, but it is possible. In my class not many of us have kids. I believe only two or three out of the 40 students have kids, but they are still in the program and have managed it. Also, many other grads have completed the program while having young children.

Regarding clinical sites, I was able to choose my location and I have not been asked to change. They did send us an email asking if anyone wanted to change to Olive View, but I guess they got enough students because nobody was forced to change to Olive View (that I know of). Perhaps you can talk to the administration office about your concern with the clinical site. They are very nice people that are willing to work with you.

I understand Rio Hondo and community college offer the fee waiver, but LAC has a tuition deferment contract. Have you heard of it? With this contract you are only required to pay $700 before each semester. After you graduate you have one year to get a job with any Department of Health facility (LAC+USC Medical Center, Olive View, Harbor UCLA and many others) and the rest of the tuition will be waived.

Thank you for your feedback, I really appreciated it.

I heard about the deferment, yet LAC does not guarantee if students who graduated from LAC will be hire by USC.

I am still waiting for the notification letter, which will be send out by early Nov.

Of course they don't guarantee a job but it's really great not having to pay the full tuition up front. You really just have to think about it all. Even though I had the chance to go to nursing schools that have the fee waiver I still chose LAC because of the clinical experience.

I got what you saying, I most likely to choose LAC too If I got in. I just need some opinions to assure my self. Do you know if the deferment program only work for LA county hospital or will it work to other county such as Orange County?

Thank you

@nataliekorn: Thanks for chiming in! I'm interested in participating in the BSN bridgeway program with CSULA if I get accepted at LA County. Is it hard to get in?

@mery that I am aware of it is only LA County.

@ilovecoffee unfortunately, I have no information regarding the BSN bridge program. They have representatives from Cal State LA come speak to us but I don't go to those meetings since I would prefer a different program later. I do hear it you take classes at Cal State LA during the sessions in between classes at LAC but all I want to do is take a break. Personally, I can't get to burnt out.

@nataliekorn: Thank you for your input! I appreciate your feedback :)

I was accepted into the BSN bridge with CSULA, but I chose not to go. If your goal is to work for a County (DHS) hospital, I would wait to get your BSN. CSULA is expensive to complete the bridge option and it is based mostly on grades you received in semesters 1 and 2.

DHS hospitals don't require BSNs and only offer a 2% bonus for completing them. Some programs cost anywhere from 20-30k, so it's really not worth it. If you're planning to work at a private facility, that's a whole another story, as some hospitals require RNs to carry a BSN or the pay increases might be significant enough to warrant going back to school to obtain it.

Just be aware that the bridge program with CSULA for County is during the summers meaning you will have zero time off in between terms. If you already have children, that might be a tough pill to swallow.

Also the tuition deferment is not 1 year after graduation. It's around 6 or 7 months.

@supakimchee: Thanks for your response! Does the BSN bridge program begin the first summer or the second summer?

I'm not sure if I want to work at county hospital after graduation. Currently, I work as a care partner at two different private institutions and I'm pretty sure I can work at either if I get my BSN. However, it's a bit early for me to decide on what type of institutions I should aim to work for since I wanted to find out how it was to work at the county hospital.

You can definitely succeed with kids in nursing school! When i started at LA County, I had a 1 1/2 year old, a 4 1/2 year old and a teenager. Was is difficult? Yes! but anything is possible with prayer and dedication. I was also accepted into CSULA's collaborative BSN program. Since you live in Alhambra 9 times out of 10 you will do your clinicals at LAC USC during your 1st and 2nd semesters. 3rd semester you will have a psych rotation near Martin Luther King hospital and your ambulatory rotation in LA near USC. I was accepted into County with 78 points. Like I mentioned earlier anything is possible through prayer, I'm a firm believer that if its meant to be it will be. Please fill free to ask me if you have anymore questions
