LA County Nursing Applicants for Spring 2017-Generic Option

U.S.A. California

Published

Hello. Well I see that no one has posted anything for Spring 2017 applicants and I know that I'm feeling a little nervous here so I'd like to know if there's anyone out there on the same boat that I am.

Hey fellow applicants! As a fellow LA County alum I'll give you guys a quick run down.

The point system is pretty straight forward (it's literally the only thing they consider). Low 90s to high 80s scores are pretty much guaranteed acceptance. The cut off is a bit trickier, as it is highly dependent on the applicant pool for that incoming semester. It seems to float anywhere from the high 70s to the low 80s. Lower than the high 70s, and your chances are not that good (but I won't say no one ever got in with mid 70s).

As far as clinical sites, it's generally based on where you live. Most students will be at LAC+USC (not USC University, Keck, or Norris as those are non-county hospitals), with usually 1 clinical group at Olive View for all 4 semesters. Harbor UCLA currently only has 1 clinical group each for 3rd and 4th semester students. Please keep in mind that they do ask where you would like to attend clinicals, but their decisions I'm told are largely based off your mailing address. However, there are many cases where I've seen students have to commute to Olive View or Harbor even though they are much closer to LAC+USC. This is because they HAVE to balance clinical group sizes. The cap for students per instructor is usually 10 (I think 11-12 is possible, but they try to avoid that). So if you live in Alhambra but they assign you to Olive View or Harbor UCLA, you can raise your objections, but they may fall on deaf ears.

Also, please keep in mind that if you go to Harbor UCLA for semester 3, you WILL be attending Harbor UCLA for semester 4. Also, it is possible to get moved around sites from semester to semester (I was at LAC+USC for 1 year, then Harbor UCLA for my last year). This is largely due to the fact that not everyone makes it through. If this does happen to you, take it in stride! I was not happy initially, but seeing a different county facility was an eye-opening experience for me, and in the end it had a heavy influence on which county hospital I ended up at.

Good luck everyone!

Thanks for all the information!!

Yaaaaay! My questionnaire finally came in the mail today :)

@supakimchee: Thank you for such a detailed information! Do you mind sharing at which county facility you've decided to work at after graduation? Also, how would you speak on your working experience at the county hospital (pros & cons)? Thank you in advance! :)

@motacindy: Yay! good to hear! :)

HI...everyone,

I applied to LAC for Spring 2017 and took teas test with them, and my points is only 77. I am nervous about it. I am kinda hope to get in LAC; however, I consider tuition fees. I live by Alhambra, which is only 15 minutes from LAC.

I also applied to Rio Hondo CC, but I have to commute for about 30 minutes. I am qualify for government fee waivers if I got in Rio Hondo, yet I know LA County offer chance to work at County hospital once student graduate; although, they do not guarantee it.

I am mom of 3 yrs old and 4 months old, I really do not If I could maintain a good performance if I am lucky enough to get in the program.

Please advices

Hey guys, just send me a private message if you have any more specific questions. I'd rather not post publicly about where I work :)

I just received my questionnaire in the mail also! Do we need to mail it in or can we hand deliver? Also, anyone know the deadline?

Well I mailed mine and it seems like others on here did as well, and since we had to mail in our applications and everything I think the same goes for the questionnaire. As for the deadline, I'm unsure about that since it wasn't stated anywhere, so I would just fill it out and mail it asap lol

Oh okay thank u! I'm sending mine tomorrow. Did you type yours or hand write?

I just wrote out on my answers. It seemed like more of a hassle to type it out, but yeah space was limited lol

@supakimchee: my account doesn't have the function to pm since I'm new. If it's not too much of a hassle, pls e-mail me at [email protected].

I'd love to get some feedback from an alumni! Thank you :)
