California Department of State Hospitals

Published

Hello I was just wondering if anyone applied to the California Department of State Hospitals before and could help me out. I have interviewed and they have said to wait for 4-6 weeks for results. I am coming up on the 6th week with no news of job offer yet. They have called 2/3 references. Do they usually give a tentative offer once references are checked, or do I just have my hopes up for nothing.

Many facilities are far behind their normal hiring timeline due to COVID. I would go ahead and call them and follow up.

Specializes in retired LTC.

Civil service in NJ is NOTORIOUSLY slow; I would offer that many other states are prob so also. Esp in these C19 times.

I'd just wait 'for the wheels of civil service to move on'.

Good luck. Stay safe & stay strong.

I would email the human resources department or call and find out whats going on. Usually if they call your references then it's a good sign! Which facility did you interview at? I work in one of California Dept. of State Hospitals, so if I can answer any questions, I'll try and help!

@aspiringrn2020 I interviewed at Metropolitan in Los Angeles. Yea I will email them once I hit the 6 week mark in 2 days. I really want this job!

Update: 8th week of waiting and Human Resources say they are still pending selection. So no good news or bad news as of yet.

Do you have any concerns regarding safety? I have an upcoming interview and the more I research, the more I find that there are multiple incidents, assaults and deaths, at least at the napa facility.

Update 12th week: Got the job!

@nicknjessholmes I always have a concern about safety. There are always going to be incidents and assaults working in a psych facility. Have to be super vigilant and careful. For my facility, I have not heard of a recent death. But just be super careful and vigilant. Keep your boundaries.

Congratulations on the job! I have an interview scheduled next week at Napa. What was your interview like? Was there a physical component to your hiring process??

@nicknjessholmes I can't discuss the questions due to form I signed. However, just know some psych medications and basic safety and you should be alright. All questions, no fluff. Good luck! If they select you after interview then you will do a physical and drug screen.

Thanks for your help! Is it correct that the physical has actual agility tests and recumbent bike cardio??
