how true is it that the california board of nursing recently is no more accepting applications for the NCLEX-RN without the US SSN (US social security number)?

This just prevents foreign trained nurses from coming in and taking the test. They should have legal status before being allowed to take the exam. That's the way it should be. This also narrows down the job pool.

lol...it's California's nice way of saying, they don't want you here. Refer to the above posts.

Come to California, take the NCLEX test, just have that SSN in hand. Nothing wrong with that.

I've never understood why all US states don't require it -- why issue licenses to people who are not legally able/authorized to work in the US? It's just asking for abuse and exploitation, both of our immigration and employment laws and the individuals who may be trying to work here illegally (and are abused and exploited by unscrupulous employers in the process).

CA is just now starting to revert to the process as it always was meant to be. For a long time people circumvented the rule requiring a SSN because the CA Board allowed this. Now they are enforcing the rules that were always in place. Should have been this way all along.

Just found out about this from a friend of mine last monday when she took her nclex-rn. Since she's not CA resident, she was informed that the next time she takes the exam, they'll start asking for her SSN. It's was very frustrating for her because if she doesn't pass the nclex, then it'll be impossible for her to retake it again.

This measure will control the rampant hiring of foreign nurses willing to work for less money. I'm hoping this will help Nurses in California get better pay for their hard work. (legal foreign and u.s. citizen nurses)

I don't understand how anyone gets by without a social security number?

Don't the schools require it for registration?

Obviously they're foreign graduate nurses who never attended school here in the US.

Even if people were students in the US, it wouldn't necessarily be an issue. Lots of US schools don't verify/question a student's citizenship or immigration status, so not having an SSN wouldn't concern them. There's been quite a bit of controversy in some states about illegal immigrants attending public colleges/universities. I know there have been a few posts here in the past by people who attended nursing school (in the US) without any legal status, got all the way through school without any problems, and then ran into a brick wall when they tried to apply for licensure and the state BON required an SSN, which they didn't have.
