Cali New Grad options

Nurses Job Hunt

Hey this post is for anyone who has happened to find a job straight out of nursing school in cali. I want to work in pediatrics eventually but am willing to start out in med/surg. I don't want to work in a nursing home or home health especially because from what I've seen you need acute care experience to find a job in a hospital in Cali. I am originally from socal but about to graduate from a nursing school in Indiana and I am honestly hesitant about moving back to cali because of the competition for new grad jobs in cali. I've had interviews in Oregon, Oklahoma and Texas but if someone has suggestions on certain hospitals I might find better luck with in cali I'd appreciate it. I've applied to the residencies but it seems they go with those who already have their license and.

My advice is to get at least 1 year experience elsewhere then move back to CA. The job market is fierce for new grads and it could take you many months to land any position, let alone your top choice. If you're able to get a job right away in the specialty you want in another state, then I'd go for it.

Get one to two years experience in Indiana. You will have a much easier time finding a job in California with 1-2 yrs experience. One year working as a nurse in Indiana is far better than spending a year looking for your first nursing job in So Cal.

If you do feel like moving back, Prime Healthcare hires new grads - but usually only if you go in for their "walk-in Wednesdays", they almost never look at online applications. I know a bunch of people who got a job doing that. Some even got on L & D! I got on with Tele. Hope this helps!
