HI! I just would like to inquire if all those who recently took Nclex for California and passed will be able to see their names at the CA BON website even if one does not have SSN?
Please help. I just took mine yesterday! What should I expect? Where to look for result much faster than waiting for the snail-mail?
Silverdragon,You may apply for an SSN if you have green card already in the US, or if you are a US citizen. Other than that, you cannot get an SSN.
You can get a SSN if you have a H1b, L1 or other valid work visa allowing you to live and work in the US. It is not restricted to just GC or citizen
Hi ,
FYI, a green card or also called PRC/Permanent resident card is a permission to work & stay in the US, that is the one that will be given to you if you have a working visa here in the US [the one stamped on your passport]...now the green card may be conditional or not depending on your employment sponsorship,H1 visa or whatever visa you applied for...without that you will not be given an SSN. Aside from that not all green cards are valid for employment.
For short, to be able to have an SSN, you must have either of the ff:
*legitimate sponsor in the US, to have green card
*if you are a US citizen
h1b, l1 are work visas and nothing to do with immigrant visas and a ssn is still required if working with a work permit.
to apply for a social security number and card:
complete an application for a social security card (form ss-5); and
show us original documents or copies certified by the issuing agency proving:
u.s. citizenship or immigration status [including department of homeland security (dhs) permission to work in the united states];
age; and
identity.
showing immigration status includes work permits
work permit from dhs (i-766).
are there different types of cards?
we issue three types of social security cards. all cards show your name and social security number.
the first type of card shows your name and social security number and lets you work without restriction. we issue it to:
u.s. citizens; and people lawfully admitted to the united states on a permanent basis.
the second type of card shows your name and number and notes, “valid for work only with dhs authorization.” we issue this type of card to people lawfully admitted to the united states on a temporary basis who have dhs authorization to work.
the third type of card shows your name and number and notes, “not valid for employment.” we issue it to people from other countries:
who are lawfully admitted to the united states without work authorization from dhs, but with a valid nonwork reason for needing a social security number; or
who need a number because of a federal law requiring a social security number to get a benefit or service.

I beg to disagree. As pointed out by Silverdragon, an IEN in the US with a valid work visa can apply for an SSN as well. It is not limited to citizens or PRs only.
