In CPR for Adult victim the rescuer should give compressions:ventilations 15:2 ,My question is : still we can give 5:1 or 5:2 compressions: ventilations as one rescuer doing alone . THANKS .:chuckle

Dear Sweetnursr11, I am an American Heart Association accredited BLS Instructor, and I can tell you that after American Heart made changes in 2000 the compression to breath ratio is 15:2 for 1 and 2 rescuers. Chlidren and infant ratios remain 5:1. Hope this helped you out. Warrior Woman:p

I think the rationale behind the 15:2 in one-man is that it was doubtful that with the more frequent repositioning of the resucer from chest to head etc at the 5:1 ratio, would not allow adequate ventilation, and also not keep up the compression rate. The 15:2 gives more time in each different position for a single rescuer, so more consistent compression rate, and better ventilation, with enough time for deep inhalations and exhalations. With the infant, you don't even have to move your head from ventilation position, so no need to change from 5:1.

Has anyone done this out of work... in real life? I have given CPR on a neighbor, mind you I am an ICU nurse used to codes, monitors and crash carts... all I had was me and an idiot 911 operator. Yes, you need to know guidelines to pass the test. More importantly... when used away from the hospital you need to assess your ability to continue 15 cycles of compressions with 2 vents with your stamina to continue.

Like conditioning, I counted this cycle in my head... I think out loud too. After 16 cycles when the FIRE DEPARTMENT arrived,(with no intubation equipment, monitors or drugs !!!!!) I was exhaused, unable to give a verbal run down and giving INADEQUATE ventilation due to exhaustion. ONLY senior citizens in the house. I had one hold the head in position and moved to a 5 compression to 1 vent until I was asked to stop and hook up the AED....18 cycles later....an eternity!!!!

My point... the numbers are important for the test.... lets let the test makers do the requirements in a real life simulation and see how they fare....

Me again, I forgot to state my point.... sorry! If you are too tired to give adequate ventilation... what's the point!!!! the whole reason to circulate boils down to oxygen!

I think every out of facility death needs to be reassessed based on the rescuers ability... no research to back this... just real life experience.

One last tid bit... I had NO protective equipment in the house... neighbor knocked on my door and asked for help one fine Sunday morning.."come quick I think ..... is dead".

Put myself at risk because it appeared to be a sudden cardiac death.. lovely woman was baking bread and fell out suddenly, not even cyanotic when I arrived next door. Wanted her back badly.

Message is to BEG, BEG... please purchase protective equipment, keep on key ring or wherever is accessable. When placed in the position, I think many nurses would forgo their personal safety to try to save a life. I never thought I could be placed in such a position and never prepared for it... If it could happen to me......

I was just trying to clarify something for someone who asked what the CURRENT REQUIREMENTS ARE. I meant no offense or condescention toward anyone. No, you are right. I've never used it on anyone. I'm not a big shot critical care nurse or anything,just a lowly LPN student/EMT/BLS Instructor. YEESH!!! Next time I'll just keep my mouth shut. It's les painful that way.
