Burned out and hate nursing

Published

Since I was a little girl, I have always wanted to be a nurse. I wanted to help people. I wanted to heal. Now 4 years out of nursing school, I HATE nursing with a passion. I am a med/surg nurse with a BSN.

Reasons I hate nurses (in no particular order)

1. Most days I feel like a pill-pusher. I don't feel like I make a difference.

2. Doctors feel they are perfect.

3. Patient satisfaction scores.

4. Patient sense of entitlement. (see #3)

5. Family at the bedside dictating what they want...like I am their personal servant. I have to comply (see #3).

6. Lack of appreciation mized with how much more work can they give us.

7. Nights, weekends, and holiday. I don't want to give everything I've got only to see no return in work satisfaction.

I don't want to be a case manager. I don't want home health nursing. I really want to be outside of the hospital. Quite honestly, I want to be away from people. I would be quite content to work on a computer and have email interactions. Preferably work from home. Any suggestions?

Nursing satisfaction??????:roflmao::roflmao::roflmao::roflmao:

Input is asked but management does what they want.

I thought I was the only one who wants out of bedside nursing! I miss working at a computer all day with just my thoughts for company. I got away from med surg a few years ago and have been happier working step down cardiac, but, the work keeps piling on and the other day I snapped at a physical therapist giving her a nasty remark about wearing an isolation gown when the patient had a negative test, but wasnt cleared yet, totally my fault, and now for the first time in my 19 years I am on probation. Not even a warning, because she put in a compliant that went up to the president of the hospital. I would love to find something that earns me what I make now, but away from people.

Ouch! Seems like overkill to me!

I hope you can find something that fits you better OP. I was burned out from medical floor nursing, policies constantly changing, demanding patients and visitors. Understaffed 90% of the time.

Management can be quite unrealistic and our workload was never lessened. I work in hospice now and while some people can be a bit overbearing, they are a lot more thankful.

Med surg and telemetry floors for many reasons are the worst. Ortho is no better, either. Some nurses enjoy these floors (thank you, because we need you!), but many do not. The key is finding your niche and recognizing your limits. This is different for everyone.

I would also agree that second career nurses sometimes share a different perspective. Politics exist everywhere and long hours too, but I think that after years of working, you start to realize that a balanced life is important....and there are certain things that are intolerable.

@Tepidorchid...

Did you learn medical coding before you were hired for your position? Did you take the coding classes? I'm wondering if that would help when applying for insurance jobs. Thanks!

Telephone Triage! I love it so much I am writing a book about it. You get to play "Colombo" all day. (you're probably too young to know who that is.)

LOL. I know who Columbo is. Nursing is a second career for me. I am older than you think. While I liked my first career, it didn't provide financially for a family. I worked long hours, and I didn't have flexibility. I chose nursing because it was something I always wanted to do, and I couldn't afford to work and go to college.

2 things that annoy me the most!

1) Being thought of as a "Servant" Even to people who are perfectly capable of doing things themselves. "Im just to tired to wipe my own butt. Do it for me.".......really??

2) Patients and family memebers wanting pills for EVERYTHING! I wish we just had a pill to cure stupidity, it would solve all of our problems. And this "stupidity pill" was allowed to be given to family members. I'm not going to give pills for everything that happens to your loved one. "Can you give him a lortab? he is in pain."..."The Lortab is making him feel tired. Can you give him a pill that keeps him awake?"...."He can't fall asleep. Can you give him a pill so he can fall asleep?"...."The sleeping pill makes him confused. Can you give him something to make him not confused?"...BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH. Shut up, seriously.

My neighbor is a nurse at a different hospital. we have a very similar schedule. When we get home (around the same time). we literally sit out on my front porch with a couple beers and laugh, vent and "let it all out" about these demanding, ungrateful, rude, think they know it all people. This includes other nurses, docotors, visitors etc. (Keeping in mind HIPPA). I love it, i look forward to it every night. I'll text her from work and be like "its a beer on the porch kind of day."

I have days where I like nursing and days where I hate it... I too thought about leaving the floor and changing my career all together.
