Burlington County College BCC 2012 Spring Nursing Program

U.S.A. New Jersey

Published

Greetings,

I am currently enrolled at BCC full time and will be finishing the last of my prerequisites this summer. I have applied to the nursing program for Spring 2012 and I know not to expect information for quite some time. I have a 3.92 GPA and received a score of 71.3% on the TEAS V test.

Once I am accepted into the nursing program the only classes I have left to take are the following: BIO 155/156 (Micro, Lab), NUR 119, NUR 120, NUR 214, NUR 215, NUR 216. I have already taken the medication administration class successfully also.

I am looking for advice/answers from fellow students going through the process. I have a few questions/concerns.

  • Will completion of my final prerequisite class this Summer be finished in time for the acceptance process?
  • What is the schedule like? I know to be available from 4P-12A M-F for classes, but that seems vague.
  • Can you double up on any nursing classes during a semester? (Registration-wise)
  • Are any nursing classes available during intersessions or summer semesters?
  • Any other advice/comments :)

Thank you very much! :nurse:

I feel the same way. I looked into holy family university, however, i dont think i can afford the day care as it is fall only/days only. Bcc's spring night program is what i really need and it will be a major let down if i dont get in. I got an 80 on the teas and 4.0 gpa, I have been working really hard just to heaar that bcc is equal opportunity for any gpa blah blah blah as long as all classes are done first.

I dont think that you will have a problem getting in once all your classes are done. When I called and spoke with them, they said that they first pick the students that have all the classes done (and the grades are good)... then they pick people with one class left to do... and so on. They really want you to be done with all your sciences. That is what they look at the most.... your grades in science. Since you will still have 2 science classes left (technically 4 with the labs) you are in the same boat as me. I have micro and nutrition left which I am taking in the fall. I am not getting my hopes up that I will be getting in, for that reason. I know they get hundreds of applications.

I also know that your TEAS score doesnt matter as long as you just passed. When I went to the nursing meeting... they specifically said that you dont have to take the test 10 times. As long as you pass... you pass. They dont care your score.

Just stay positive as best as you can. Dont put all your eggs in one basket. Look around to other schools (locally). If you are going to have to wait to start until 2013... you might as well go right for your BA. That is what I figured and started looking at schools. 4 year schools dont have any requirements as to what needs to be done. You just enter if accepted. Yes... it is more $$$ and takes longer, but chances are you will have to get your BA soon anyway.

Good luck... I hope that you get in!!!

Did anyone take the TEAS V test in the last few weeks and if so, what study guide did you use? I took mine in April and failed by 2 marks :( . Am now thinking of retaking it end of this July.

I took it a few months back. I quickly reviewed with the actual TEAS V book from the website. I should have studied more, but I was overwhelmed with all the classes I was taking at the moment. I just passed... I got a 63. I was thinking about retaking it to get a better grade, but it is not needed. Good luck when you retake it.

Good advice Rach. I am hoping I get in, I am just like you guys. I have been working my butt off and will be pretty disappointed if I don't get in! I hadn't thought of looking into 4 year schools because I REALLY want to get a job off the bat if possible and work towards BA. It takes so much more time while you're working to do any of it!

I am having a really hard time in my Philosophy class. I really hate it! It's super fast during the summer, but I have two classes per week, M & W 6p-10p. Tuesday is my "paper writing night" for the class and then the rest of the week is when I do my other two classes work. Maybe I took on too much for summer? I was just thinking, "I should drop this class!" So I came here for moral support/to remind myself why I'm trudging through. I am just irritated because it's the kind of class where no matter what kind of student you are, there's room for you to do well. We had a paper to write, and he seriously stressed that papers would not be accepted under 3 pages. He wants two full but must make third page. I know I write cohesive papers and I did all the things he wanted. I even got midway through the 4th page! I got a full letter grade down however (got a B), because basically, I didn't write "The movie Contact relates to the following four themes in our book _____, _____, ____, ____." Instead I incorporated the themes into each of the following four paragraphs, as he requested. So essentially "I made more work for him" because I didn't put that one sentence, and I got a full letter grade down. I am just so irritated because I know I write good papers, I've never gotten below an A on a paper. I also saw quite a few people who didn't or barely made it to the third page, and then he said you got "half a letter grade down" if you didn't make it to the third page. What the heck! There are 7 grades in this class, all of which are equal. I just really really don't want to get a B in this class because I'm trying so hard to keep my GPA up! Man I must sound whiny here, I am just irritated. I work so hard and I know the quality of my work, and it just doesn't feel right. Well, just needed to vent to others who are in my boat! BLEH. :banghead:

Philosophy was a very hard class for me as well. Getting a "B" is good for that class. Dont worry about getting "B's" in those classes. BCC accepts "B's". You are stressing way to much. Now if you were getting a "C" then I would understand all the stress. Dont drop it unless you think your grade will drop lower. You are 1/2 way through. At this point in my "college career" I aim for "B's". I am so over trying to get all "A's". I want to have a life besides going to class and studying, b/c once I am in a nursing program I can kiss that social life goodbye. I guess I am not stressing as much b/c I dont think that I am going to be going to BCC... I think that I might be moving to AZ. and go to an accelerated school out there. That is a better opportunity for me. I will be my BA in 2 years rather then just my Associates. Good luck with the class. Keep your head up.

Hi does anyone know if nurses who just graduate with an associates can get a job? I was told by many people that you now need a bsn can any1 let me know?

I think you CAN get a lob, but most prefer BSN. I am hoping to get a job which pays for or contributes BSN.

hi everyone,

i am going into my final semester of the bcc nursing program. i know how you all feel with the waiting game. hang in there! if you don't make it for the spring semester, apply again. if you get waitlisted, tell them you still are interested. there are people who get accepted and then decide not to enroll.

i am looking for advice/answers from fellow students going through the process. i have a few questions/concerns.

will completion of my final prerequisite class this summer be finished in time for the acceptance process?

most likely, yes. i applied when i still needed to complete micro (i finished that up in the fall and started the nursing program the following spring).

what is the schedule like? i know to be available from 4p-12a m-f for classes, but that seems vague.

the schedule for nur 119 is lecture from 4-5:50 on monday and tuesday. clinicals can be from 4-10:30 wednesday or thursday. lab will be from 4-7 on wednesday or thursday (you will go to clinical one day and lab the other). exams are usually scheduled on fridays beginning at 4. when you get into the upper level courses you will have 2 clinical days (wednesday and thursday) nur 215 clinicals are from 4-11:30.

can you double up on any nursing classes during a semester? (registration-wise)

no. one nursing class a semester is plenty!

are any nursing classes available during intersessions or summer semesters?

the only classes that are available are nur 103 (med administration) and nur 127 (pharmacology essentials). i believe 127 is only offered in the summer.

any other advice/comments

there is an attendance policy. you must be in class 85% of the time. this includes lab and clinicals. if you miss too many lectures, labs, or clinicals, you will fail the course. passing score for all exams and quizzes is 80%. they do not round up percentages; this includes your final grade. when you get into your second semester and beyond, you will have to take a 10 question med math quiz. you need to score 100% to pass; you also have 3 tries. if you do not pass within 3 tries you have to withdraw from the course. i'm sorry if all of this sounds harsh but i'd rather let you know up front what you're getting into. the program is hard but doable. the instructors are tough but willing to help you out. if you find yourself falling behind, ask them for help. they all want you to be successful. :)

i hope i've answered some of your questions. good luck!:):)

Thank you, thank you, thank you for replying. I will go over this a couple more times. Very helpful!

KCCC,

When did you get your acceptance letter for Spring?
