Burlington County College BCC 2012 Spring Nursing Program

U.S.A. New Jersey

Published

Greetings,

I am currently enrolled at BCC full time and will be finishing the last of my prerequisites this summer. I have applied to the nursing program for Spring 2012 and I know not to expect information for quite some time. I have a 3.92 GPA and received a score of 71.3% on the TEAS V test.

Once I am accepted into the nursing program the only classes I have left to take are the following: BIO 155/156 (Micro, Lab), NUR 119, NUR 120, NUR 214, NUR 215, NUR 216. I have already taken the medication administration class successfully also.

I am looking for advice/answers from fellow students going through the process. I have a few questions/concerns.

  • Will completion of my final prerequisite class this Summer be finished in time for the acceptance process?
  • What is the schedule like? I know to be available from 4P-12A M-F for classes, but that seems vague.
  • Can you double up on any nursing classes during a semester? (Registration-wise)
  • Are any nursing classes available during intersessions or summer semesters?
  • Any other advice/comments :)

Thank you very much! :nurse:

I received two letters from the college; I believe the first one was mid to late September. My first letter told me I was on the waitlist (if I still wanted to be); I sent the letter back letting them know I was still interested. Within two weeks (the beginning of October) I received another letter from the college letting me know that I had been accepted after review of my summer courses (at this point I was taking my Micro class; it was the only pre-req I had left).

Basically my point is don't give up hope if you get the waitlist letter. There is still a chance you can get in; there are 60 seats available for the spring semester and 60 for the fall. If you don't get in, reapply! Your chances are just as good as the next person as long as you meet the college's requirements (minimum GPA, TEAS test score, etc.).

The evening program offers two sections of DAY clinicals (there are six sections total; 2 day clinical sections and 4 evening clinical sections). This means you will have lecture from 4-5:50 just like everyone else and your clinical will be from 7a-2:30p one day and lab in the morning on the other. **ONCE YOU SIGN UP FOR A CLINICAL TIME (DAY OR EVENING) YOU CAN'T SWITCH** You can't decide to choose a day clinical for 119 and then go to evenings for 120 and vice versa. You will be in a day or evening clinical all four semesters depending on which you choose.

Oh, and the instructors are sticklers for being on time; they will take attendance at 4p (this includes clinical instructors). If you are not there or come in late, you are absent! There are NO MAKE-UPS for quizzes. If you are absent on a quiz day (no matter what the excuse; it doesn't matter to them) you receive a zero and this grade IS NOT DROPPED. There are quizzes in lecture AND lab.

Hope this helps!:)

I am keeping my fingers crossed for Spring :) I still need Mirco lab (I had to take an "x") this summer :( but other then that I am done. I applied for Fall 11 but was denied because of my HS bio lecture/lab grade. So I took both classes and passed. I am excited and nervous!

Do you think that clinicals are better during the day or evening? A evening nursing student from my med. Administration class said that students in the evening miss out on all the action because the patients are all sleeping.

Oh wow, it seems that there are a lot of us hoping to get into the spring 2012 RN program. I'm 32 with 3 kids and no possible way to do the day program. Reading all of you and how long you have been working towards acceptance into the program has discouraged me a little :(. Well, I need no remedial classes and I had a 93% on my TEAS but I have none of the courses needed ( except for english 101). I'm taking 17 credits this fall which will put me closer to having all my pre reqs done. Should I even bother apply for the spring 2012 program this late? And has anyone considered the Thomas Edison State College BS nursing program?

hi mary! i'm a bcc nursing student going into my second semester. i just want to answer the questions that you asked

will completion of my final prerequisite class this summer be finished in time for the acceptance process?

the nursing program waits for all final summer grades before they make considerations for acceptance into the progrm. so you'll be fine.

what is the schedule like? i know to be available from 4p-12a m-f for classes, but that seems vague.

my first semester went as follows mon&tues lec 4-6pm, weds lab 8am-12pm, and clinical thurs 7am-1:30pm. i had fridays off exact for exam days. you may be confused at first but i chose to do day lab and clinicals. only 20 students will get this option (first come first serve). all others follow the normal night schedule 4pm-8pm for lab, and late clinicals (i can't quote the exact time)

can you double up on any nursing classes during a semester? (registration-wise)

nope one semester/class at a time.

are any nursing classes available during intersessions or summer semesters?

only electives are available during the summer and intersessions

any other advice/comments

i see that you already took medication administration. well, unfortunately you will have to take it over. your completion must be no more than one semester before entry into the program. in other words by the time you enter to nursing 120 it can't be over a year since you took the course. for instance, i also entered during the spring (2011) it was only acceptable if we had taken it during the winter intercession. anyone who had taken it prior to that could not administer meds and had to retake the course. taking med admin isn't actually required until you enter your second semester. but its great if you do ahead of time just not too early.

my advice is to study hard. do all the required readings. make sure you get the study guide "fundamentals of success" (it's a recommended book). start on your drug cards early following the format in the syllabus.

good luck everyone,

shannon

I have been in evening clinicals since day 1. You are at clinical from 4-10:30 in the first three semesters and 4-11:30 in your last semester. Generally you are in preconference the first hour of clinical then you go on the floor. The last hour of clinical is used for postconference. Not all of the patients are sleeping; some days there is a lot to do and others not so much (that's when you find things to do). When something "exciting" is going to happen it doesn't matter if you're there during the day or evening :) A lot will depend on your clinical instructor as well.

Pick a clinical that works for your schedule. If day clinicals work, then pick days. Just keep in mind you can't switch to evenings (or vice versa if you picked evening clinicals) after you made your choice. I had to choose evening clinicals because I work full time during the day. I have been very happy with my choice and have had many good experiences. My patients have been happy to have some extra TLC from me when visiting hours are over.

Good luck with with your decision. You will be fine! Clinical is what you make of it. If you have nothing to do, ask a nurse on the floor if you can tag along with her/him. Most will be more than happy to help you out. :) :)

Has anybody heard any news or been in touch with the nursing dept.?

no i haven't but according to ppl from last year we should be finding out sometime between now and oct 15...i want to know but at the same time i dont cause i dont want to be rejected lol...

I can't wait!!!!!

Hey guys,

got a call from admissions requesting verification that my high school bio and chem had labs...verified it for them...you think that is a sign that i will at least get in or waitlisted...why would they bother calling if they are going to deny me...any ideas???

I would say thats a good sign :D did you happen to ask when the letters will be mailed out?????

No I didn't...sorry :( But i was looking at the thread for last years spring admissions and they found out by the 15th of october...so hopefully within the next few weeks...she did tell me to have the stuff to her before the end of next week...even though i got it to her yesterday, I guess they still need some more time to review and make selections...so hopefully soon!!!
