BSN program at TSU?

Hi, I'm currently a freshman pre-nursing major at MTSU. I have started completing my pre-reqs to apply to nursing school and my gen ed courses.I would like to apply Spring 2015. I'll be finished with all of my gen ed courses(41 hours) after the upcoming spring semester. During that time, I'll be taking A&P I. What I've realized is, TSU requires a ridiculous amount of credits to apply to their nursing program(61 hours, 60 if you're a transfer student and you don't have to take freshman orientation). So, in addition to meeting the requirements for admission to MTSUs nursing school(which is 5 semesters vs TSUs 4), I have to take an additional like 13 hours.

I had already planned on taking A&P II this summer and then I would take Micro in the fall because they are the only classes I have left for admission to MTSUs nursing program, however, for TSU, I have to take like 5 more classes, which are:

  • College Algebra(MTSU requires Applied Statistics, so I took that)
  • Sociology(I took a health and wellness class instead because MTSU "recommends" it for nursing)
  • Elementary Statistics(psychology)
  • Developmental Psych(which I already planned on taking in the fall anyways), and
  • Pathophysiology. What sequence would you suggest I take these courses in? and What's patho like?

I guess my questions are:

1. Has anyone gotten into TSUs nursing program for Spring 2014? If so, can you share your GPA and HESI score with me? Also, was there an interview process?

2. Do you have to have all of your pre-reqs completed before you start the program? I know it said something about being done by Summer Term I?

3. How is the program in general? Where do you usually do clinicals and stuff? Do you like it?

4. I haven't applied to TSU(admission to the university itself) yet, but is there any way I would be able to speak to an advisor before that, or do I have to apply first? Which wouldn't be a problem, I plan on applying this summer anyways.

5. Any other general information and do's and don't you can give me about the program?

    Are you sure you wanna go to TSU? I've heard it's kinda crazy there.

    I have heard quite a few negative things about their program. An LPN friend of mine met with an advisor there to discuss getting into the nursing program. The women she spoke to reviewed her transcripts and knew that she was already a nurse and told her that she would never get into their program and that she should consider their dental hygiene program. She was shocked because she is already a nurse and has no interest in dental hygiene! I'v also heard from others that have applied that Their paperwork was repeatedly lost and they had to resend it. Because of these reasons and the reputation of the school I never considered it. I'm sorry I can't be if help! Good luck to you! :-)

    Did they give your friend a reason as to why she would never get into their program? I'm wondering because I want to apply for their RN-BSN program but have no time for the run around. I am actually a TSU graduate from the mid 90s. I vaguely remember a few hoops that I had to jump through but nothing that left a mental scar.

    With that said, has anyone completed TSU's RN-BSN program? If so, how was the experience?

    Lol...I doubt his comment is about you being black. TSU has a reputation for its absolute cluster of an administration and is known in the region as "teach yourself university". If you don't mind bureaucratic nightmares and administrative run-around then TSU is a good option.

    No I didn't hear the reason. She didn't have a low GPA but it wasn't exactly the highest either and she was told that she would never get in. They were not even interested in working with her and figuring out a way for her to get in.

    I am an LPN and was allowed to take several courses online with the RN-BSN students. I took patho, pharm and gero online with them. So I have a little experince with the RN-BSN program. Those classes were not easy but there not supposed to be. The most difficult part of the classes for me was the group projects. There were group projects for pharm & patho. It was difficult because since its an online class and the other group members lived far away there was no way we could meet. And there was a lot of emailing back and forth.

    Oh I'm sorry. I just realized that you asked about TSU's program and not MTSU's. I'm getting confused, lol. All the above info about the RN-BSN program is about MTSU.

When I spoke with my advisor, she basically told me I wouldn't get in with less than a 3.5 and a high HESI score. They usually try to make you switch your major or change your career path because they basically have it in your mind that you're going to fail. That's why I kinda wanted to transfer. I'd rather deal with a paperwork nightmare than people who dont believe in me and constantly put me down.

    I got into MtSU's program witha 3.3 GPA and a 86 on the HESI...

    do any of you know anything or experienced anything with u o f memphis, ut system( knox, chat, and uthsc), etsu, cumberland, or belmont?

    They have 2.8 to apply, 3.5 to be competitive on the advising sheet... I guess it just depends on what year/ semester you apply because some semesters are more competitive than others I guess. My advisor kept telling me it's getting way more competitive... so a 3.5 might not even cut it by the time I'm ready to apply.

    mee9mee9 I've looked into Memphis a lot and I would go there, but that would mean I have to take the TEAS V in addition to the HESI. Memphis just looks at GPA and if you pass the TEAS or not. You can look at the Lowenberg School of Nursing website. It has a lot of info on there.
