Broward College Nursing May 2015

Published

Hi everyone I didn't see one made yet so I guess this will be the official thread for BC May 2015!

Specializes in Cardiac/Telemetry/Covid19.

Okay- I have a question- Are any of you concerned with job hunting once we are all RNs? I know some of you have CNA, etc experience, but I personally don't have any healthcare experience. I had posted this question elsewhere on the forum also, but just wondering if you are concerned about companies hiring new grads with 0 years experience. I mean what if we don't get the scholarship from the hospitals, don't qualify, or don't apply- what happens then?

Hi London I know it's a little scary and you might feel a bit uncertain but RN's are in high demand. I think any career you decide to go into there's always that thought hanging over your head. Not just Nursing. The purpose of clinicals is to prepare us (even those with zero experience) for the real world. U may need to start at the bottom and prove yourself but I believe that's why this program is so demanding and pushes you. I wouldn't worry too much. I think this is all the normal anxiety you would feel prior to jumping into any career.

Thanks Jenny I really appreciate that, I just look through all the ads for RNs in varying hospitals and they all require 1-2 years experience. It's certainly on my mind. I have read and spoken to a few people who say it took them up to one year before they found their first job!

No prob London. Listen I know someone who's been in the medical field working for an eye doctor for years! She went back to school got her degree became an RN. I know what your thinking "oh she's already in the medical field". No not really. She had no idea how to draw blood, do an EKG or even wound care! She learned through clinicals. She went on job interviews and was offered positions but she was also extremely picky! She didn't have the years of experience they were looking for but they still were giving her chance. Problem was is that she wanted the "nice schedule" with "the big money" that only comes after you've proven yourself to your employer. Now she's back working at the eye doctors office letting her degree go to waste. Moral of the story is opportunities will be available you just have to know when to take advantage of the opportunities that are given to u. There are places that hire fresh out of school nurses. They might not be glamorous but get the 1-2 years u need and move on.

@ Lodonfog I have the same concern, and I'm in the same boat. I think there are opportunities for RN's with no prior experience in the med field as well. Meanwhile I've been trying to obtain jobs, and volunteer/internship opportunity in the hospital and nursing homes. .. Does anyone have any advice ? :-\

When you go to clinicals you will see a lot of new BC grads. You realize many students get hired. But it had a lot to do with your attitude at clinicals as well I think. They watch you.

Okay, that's reassuring. I'll try the best that I can during clinicals. Thanks HammockBound

Wow guys! Because I'm obsessing on everything at this point, I checked last years postings. They found out on the 24th page of the thread. We are on page 75!! Must mean we are a very friendly, supportive, talkative, outgoing group! Looks like the date was 3/27 too, a Wednesday, so my prediction will be 3/25 for finding out. Wouldn't it be amazing if we found out sooner?!

Ok everyone just emailed Nicole this morning (I know I know) & response was "decision will be out in the next week or so" :banghead: so I guess maybe not till beginning of next week? Last year did find out very late so I guess we're in the same boat....maybe who knows! :sorry:

Hi everybody!!! I just joined and also waiting for decision. I am planning to attend North campus. Anyone else for North campus? I hope we all get in!

I will be hoping for North Campus!
