Hi everyone I didn't see one made yet so I guess this will be the official thread for BC May 2015!
I'm wondering if I shouldn't buy the previous edition for some of the books. I'll be paying out of pocket for everything since I'm not eligible for financial aid nor loan. I could rent some of them but I write and highlight a lot in my books, otherwise I won't retain anything. 18+ books!!!And they are ridiculously expensive.
I'm gonna need two jobs after graduation to recover from nursing school's debt. 🙉🙉🙉
Hey jmlinou over at south campus the email the dean sent about the booklist indicated that we could get the older edition of some of the books. Mostly though it seems she was saying ok to the older edition for a few books that the newer editions just came out. We basically could get away with it. (Like the math book) 4th edition just released but we could get away with using the older one. I don't think u could really do that though with books that the newest edition came out a couple years ago.
Hello future nurses and nurses,
My name is Giselle and and I have a study guide that helped me a lot on the Hesi A2. It helped a lot with my vocabulary, AP, math, grammar and reading. I bought it from someone for $ 30 but I ll it for $ 20. If interesting email me here [email protected]
I know there are some concerns about books and which ones you need. This is for Central Campus and I started last year May 2014 so they usually don't change too much stuff but here is my advice from experience with the goal of not spending as much money in the beginning
***All students you can get Amazon Prime for free 6 months*** (just need an edu email address)
now if you need a book fast you can get it in 2 business days (its really fast)
for the summer Process I and Process II:
I don't know which edition they have for perry and potter but you can get away with an one edition earlier. I did well using the 7th edition. But the 8th edition is old enough that you may find it cheap. And you can rent it cause you really won't use it after process I and II
The clinical book is may not be essential. It helps to review some of the steps for skills and return demo. But they go over most of the steps in clinical class just take really good notes. In process II you rarely open up the book so if your strapped for cash you can pass on this book just focus on good notes and maybe borrowing a book in the lab for practce
Stat Book - need it for homework first week (this was only book I bought at bookstore) this is Catillo: Strategies, techniques and approch
Drug guide is essential once you go to the hospital (just pass return demo maybe have 3 to 4 weeks)
same with the Diagnostic book - Van Leeuwen - Davis Lab and Diagnostic Handbook
Central Campus - Don't buy the Pharm Book - it might be cheap but its not needed.
Math Book - I would buy it cause it just gives you lots of problems and the teacher uses those to teach you in class
just makes it simple to learn in class. So you could get by with an old edition, but I would stick to the required Dosages and Calculations
you can hold off on buying the blue bag. You dont need it until process II
Medical Surgical Nursing - Lewis books aren't needed during Process I and II for the exams. You may need them to create care plans for homework or projects to review pathophys. This is the book for 3rd class GiGu and later on for Ortho/Neuro and Cardio
Never bought study guide Lewis Med Surg, don't know if many people used them
You can get by with the old edition of Lewis Med Surg - I've been using the 7th edition
Test Success Books / Fundamentals Success / Fundamentals Review Rationales
you should buy at least one - get an older edition very low price
The study guide for Perry and Potter I never used it some people used them but aren't essential but may help
Cox Clinical Applications - isn't needed right away you may have an assignment to make a care plan in Process I and Process II
pocket companion for physical exam - not needed but helps for exam about physical exam and return demo.
Lippincot Fluid and electrolytes is for Process II. For the 2nd or 3rd exam
I don't even know what Taber's medical dictionary is
Specialty books can wait until start those classes
Peds
I used the 8th edition of Wongs
OB/GYN
I used an old edition - did most of studying from the power points (the only class you can do this)
Psyche
I used the new book cause there were changes is the DSM
So really first week you need Perry and Potter Text Book, Math Book, Skills Book, and the Castillo Strategies Technique - you will have homework due during clinical very early
Again this is for Central Campus and this is from my memory so I may missed a few things here or there let me know. Send me a list of your required/recommended books and I can give you a heads up
I have the mindset if I'm going to use an old edition there may be 1% new material so I'll need to study even harder to be successful. So, I was never really scared of using old editions but get the newest edition if you have any reservations. Or get the old edition at a really low price thinking taht you can rent the newest one if your studying isn't going well. But in most cases the old edition is sufficient for this program.
**Also look out for pdf/ebooks that some students have for free. You can read on computer or tablet (but that gets a little tedious)
